Last night was the 1st BS of the yr, and it just happened to be a world Qualifying event. I took River Birch Run Rain and River Birch Run Wyatt. Rain didn't have much luck but Wyatt was great and brought home the honers. Now it's time to hit the woods hard again till the next show in two weeks. There was allot of top notch handlers there this yr, and we have come along ways to be right up there with them. i hope this is a sign of good things to come. After all it is the year of the dog!

Well made it back to the woods after some down time. Coon are STILL not running the weather is really not helping. I swear it has rained since christmas and is too warm. Ran one track last night on the river bottom but the coon crossed over the river by way of a few tree's. The dogs new it wasen't in the tree and never gave a tree bark. But they couldn't pick the track up and never realized that they needed to cross the river. That's ok there young dogs and it will come. I tried to cross the river myself so they would come along and pick it back up. But the water was to deep. Just as well I supose. I made them work on up the river bank but not a peep no more coon around. Just on old possum that Pipper found and rolled around. But she kept her mouth shut as not to draw my attention cause she know's there off limets. I saw her any way and told her to leave it alone. I was very impressed that the pup wanted nothing to do with it and kept on hunting. Shortly after that the coyotes started yepping and howeling. That's part of the reason I can't seem to find coon these days. They seemed to be where the girls lost the coon track. I hope the old ringtail got up a tree or ina hole before the yotes came in. I'm waiting for some good hard cold weather to come back in and then it will be me vs the yotes!

Last night as well was a rough one. Took Queenie and her pup Whiskey. They struck pretty fast but it's that time of yr. for those old boar coon races. They stayed right on him too, I lost them for the wind was blowing about 15 to 20 mph. But went in the diferction I last saw them. I had to walk across 3 plowed, wet fields. My legs were killing me. But I caught up with them treeing at someones barn. It figures! So then I had the long walk back with two dogs dragging me. I put about 3 miles in, I followed the water way but took a wrong turn and ended walking all the way around a woods. NOT the woods I was hunting. But got back on track and finally made it back to the truck. I was beat and yet another night of noting to show for it. I hope it all pays off in the end.

Things started out on a great note last night as I took Pipper and Wyatt out. I picked up my friend Laura and we hunted just down from her house on the river. I cut them out and they both opened up pretty quick. They pushed the coon up pretty fast and Pipper did a nice job treeing in water. The coon was up a pretty snall tree and easy to see. I let the guy go to run another time. Walked the dogs back to the truck and across the road to cut out again. They jumped another track fast. But ws working it hard. Finally made it into the woods off the river and Wyatt opened hard and fast. Pipper wasen't opening any more. So I looked for Wyatt and he busted butt out of the woods.... With Pipper not barking and him moving so fast he must have bumped a deer. So I shocked the heck out of him. So Pipper came running to us as she always does when a pup is doing wrong. Laura lead her up and headed back to the truck as I headed twardsthe last place I heard him. He dosen't come back when he's been shocked but he does drop off the deer. So I went looking and Laura picked me up. I got out the tracking system. He was where I herd him last but a neigbor had tied him up. So the hunt was over, went home.

Well that night it was the Brokensword(creek) but wide and deep enough to be a river. I also hunt off the Olantangey river and the Sanduskey river.
Last night I was going to stay in for the night since it was so warm out. It had gotten up to 58 was staying pretty steady. When it gets that warm in the winter the coon tend to lay up in the tree's and don't run around much. But about 10pm I got a call from a friend (hide hunter). His light broke again. (We just took it to get fixed last week.) I told him he could use my spare till we could take it back. He said the coon were running and he'ed gotten 3. Well he spot lights the coon then begs the dogs to tree them. I mentioned that they should be lay up coon but he insisted that they were running. He said he was going back out for a while so I said I would join him. He refused to take any of his dogs!!! He knows how I feel about spot lighting coon and I will not shoot a coon down my dogs didn't tree. He didn't want me to see that his dogs barley leave his feet and don't have a clue. He told me last week how he's been getting about 2 coon every night he goes out. I told him how my dogs have been busting there butt's and are luckey to tree 1 a night. But then again I don't spot light coon. And I told him about the ones the dogs worked but in the deep water couldn't get treed. I usally spot those coon. I'll show them the tree, but never shoot a coon that they could not find on there own. I really don't know why he even takes dogs, he dosen't let them learn, what a waste. It was worth him seeing 4 coon in one tree layed up while the dogs were running the one in the swamp. He would have shot all 4 if I hadn't of been there. But he new he couldn't with me and we walked out with nothing!

Well I didn't make it out last night I had a club meeting. I wanted to go out after but the lights went out on the truck so I didn't have anything to drive. But my mom took old Pipper dog back to the woods this morning for a walk. My has renamed her "Gone in 60 seconds" as soon as she let her off the lead she was in a dead sprint down the path to the woods. She said it didn't take long and she struck on the path and ran it across the RR bed and into a hole on the other side. She called her off and headed on down the path. Where she wne t nuts. Mom was worried cause she saw where the deer had bedded down and that where Pipper started baying. Pipper has never fooled with deer and just a few feet from the beds she was slamming a tree. Mom was giving her a hard time. Mind you it's 8am not PM. But as she looked up there was a BIG old coon in the tree. And Pipper was letting it know she was there. She talked her up and pulled her off the tree. Pipper then ran a fence row into the woods where she hit another track in the swamp. She ran it out and into a brush pile. Mom lead her up and headed home. She ran 3 coon in an hr. I'm lucky to tree 1 in 3 hrs. I guess I need to be hunting in the morning instead of night! Last yr I hunted an hr. before dark every night and was treeing coon. When no one else was. But it hasen't been that cold and not much snow here lately. You can bet tomarrow morning i'll be up early hitting the woods, I can't let my mom show me up!

Took Whiskey out last night for his 1st hunt alone. He did fine it did seem to bother him much that he was alone. He work a good long track across a creek a few times and up and down some tree lines. The coon was in a den tree 1/4 of a mile down a tree line. Droped him out again and he ran the track out of the woods across the road and into a barn. Thank god he couldn't get in the barn. So I grabbed him up and headed home. He's going to be just fine. I just needs to get on some good hot coon to get his confidence up when he's hunting alone to move the tracks faster. He really pushes them when he's got help. It will come with time he's just a pup!

I put the dogs up for a few days with all the rain and snow. Went out last night for one dump with Pipper and she ran one through 2 woods and a field. I grabbed her up at the front of the next woods. I'm really getting tired of the long tracks. Is spring here yet!

I didn't make it to the show this weekend. When I got up to get the dogs ready the wind was blowing 30mph. I didn't want to drive in that. So i went back to bed. When I got back up it was nice sunny and calm out. But to late to grab the dogs and go, oh well. But I made it hunting last night. More of the same Whiskey and Pipper hit a track right away. And ran it all the way down the river to the next rd. They didn't have to cross the road for the coon crawled into a hole. Where the dogs began to dig for him. The just about got to him to before the coon decided to turn and go father into the hole. Where I then lead the dogs up and headed back to the truck. I could have killed the coonand pulled it out. But it's made it this long i'd rather see it produce more of the same. The dogs were right in it's face and knew it was there that's all that matters. My best frien Laura was with me and we got some good video of it. But Laura was not happy about all the walking. We walked 2.2 miles to see on coon in a hole. At least the dogs finished it and we DID get to see the coon!

Last night was pretty brisk out, considering how warm of a winter we have had. But the old boar coon seemed to be running as usal. tried out some new woods I got permission to hun this fall. But I don't like to go to a new place alone for the 1st time. Laura went with me again. 1st drop was a nice long woods but man was it wet. Raven and Pipper struck right away. But that coon had them running circles. After about an hr of the dogs runig from one side to the other, we grabbed them up. Went to the next drop. I really like this place. I only made it about 1/3 of the way through. But what a nice woods. Long and narrow. Well they run a coon for a long ways. Right to a big swamp. Then all around and threw the swamp. Till Pipper finally came to reat on a big oak tree just outside the swamp. We were really cold at this point. So I thought it would be a good coon to give her. Well I hit the coon good with the 1st shot. Laura was bellow with the video camra. Well she got a blood bath cause the coon was not giving up and wouldn't fall. I had to shoot it a few times to get it to fall. All in the head, those big old boar coon are hard to drop. It was about 20lbs. We walked back to the truck and I skined out the coon. It was nice and I haden't kept one this year yet. Hope to make it out tonight but were supose to get 45mph winds. So will see!

Did't hunt last night just too windy, still blustery tonight. I might check later to see if the winds still blowing good. Pipper and Whiskey are giving me a hard time wanting to hunt. But it's just to risky this time of yr running coon over a mile and not being able to tell what way the dogs are going. I've last the dogs in a small woods before do to wind. I wanted to make it every night this week with the season closing. I would at least like to get Whiskey one more coon down to him. But will make do with what we've got!

Took ol Pipper dog and Whiskey out last night. Coon were running, boar coon were any way. 1st cut out they went the wrong way running a track across the road. Got hung up on a cross over tree. They weren't treeing but they really didn't know where it went. We got them lead up and headed in the right direction. Then Whiskey picked up an old track. It took a while but he finally got it warmed up. Then Pipper joined in. We walked back to the truck and moved it where I though would be closer. Then headed in twards them. They got treed solid. But it took about 1/2 hr to get to them. They had the big boar coon sitting there. So I gave it to them. Well we headed back and had to cross that old RR bridge again. So I went 1st and called Pipper over. She jumped in and swam no problem. But Whiskey wouldn't cross. So we left him thinking her would cross. He didn't and I had to walk back to him and carry him across. Which was scary walking with a dog across 6 inch metal beams 20 ft off the ground. But we made it and all was well. We walked 2.4 miles on this night, i'm ready for spring and those pop coon now!
