Well so far over the past couple of weeks doin my loop. Most of the properties are holding a lot of birds. Normally every year,by the time the season gets here, they split up into smaller groups. Pretty much spread out. Been seeing some really good toms on two particular spots. Look like definite older birds. 3 to 5 yr olds. With the spottin scope could see some sharp long hooks. Gonna get out later in the week and get a layout of the two new spots.Roosting trees, tracks, and any hang up areas,I need to be aware of. looks like the long winter didn't have to much of an effect on em. About as many as there always is each year.

Watched a coyote this morning stalking some toms struttin way out in a field. He got pretty close to the five longbeards. There wasn't any hens in sight. But I'm thinking they must have been down in the woods behind em. The coyote was at 30 yds or so down in a depression. But I think the toms were tipped off by some other birds. They folded up and ran at top speed close to 500 yds. Stopped and began struttin and gobblin. Kind of funny.

Tomorrow heading to check out one of my favorite huntin grounds. It's about tme for them to be loadin up in there. During the winter the birds get together in huge flocks,on a couple of farms in the area. But the closer April gets ,they start breakin up and spreadin out. And several of them hole up on this property for spring and summer.

A little overcast and rainy today saw lots of birds, mainly in the fields ofcourse. Good day to observe them in their natural environment . Saw a longbeard that blew me away. Been close to a decade since I'd seen a bird of this caliber. Had it all. Rope, spurs, and meat on the bones. Only thing is he's on a tree huggers property. Nearly a mile from where he wouldn't be safe! ;D Maybe he'll take a walk about and walk in front of my barrel! Goin out after work to sit and listen. Best thing to help me sleep during the day, hear some gobbles.

Saw a really big bird ,this past weekend, he was in our upper field in the evening. This morning when I saw him he was out in the bottom field, with a bunch of hens and 6 other longbeards. I'm thinkin it depends on how far up or down the hill he roosts, which field he hits. Gonna get out tomorrow to test the theory. Got a real good look at him this morning in the spotting scope. hooks and rope is all I needed to see.

Went out scoutin this morning. Weather was just plain cold and breezy. The gobblers were very vocal the hens kind of hush, hush. We should be in good shape for next saturdays youth hunt in Pa. Hope the weather is decent for the little guy to be out. This week will probably drag .

Went out this morning. Saw 6 lonely longbeards! Wish the season was here today. Walked out to a back secluded field and found the rest of the flock.Three big toms had a franchise on the hens. Thats probably why those 6 were alone,I'm thinkin. Driving between places saw a good sign several lone hens here and there, searchin out neting areas,I assume. The birds are starting to shift abit to areas where I haven"t been seeing them. Haven't been seeing very many jakes. They must be traveling. I'm gonna take a trip to the Pa property tomorrow, and probably the rest of the week. Get some patterns, and gear up for the youth hunt. The little hunter is drivin his dad nuts. I don't think he is as excited as I am.

Went out this morning after work. The gobblers were spaced out pretty good. Set up on a high vantage point. could see several of the fields with the spottin scope. In four of the 7 fields and food plots. counted 18 longbeards. Even though i arrived around 8:30,got a pretty good Idea where most of them are roosting off of each field and/or foodplot. Got tonight off ,so gonna get out there before first light. Probably set up near the one small field. That way I'll be able to hear and see all around the area. Hopefully come saturday morning,I'll have a game plan in place.

Well the youth hunt went south in a hurry. Went out friday morning heard four or five toms ,but had one in mind. On our way in the morning ,my buddy said his brother saw the big tom in the field below, from where he had been roosting. I disagreed with him. Told him when the bird left the roost he stayed high and headed toward the upper food plot. When i left friday morning that is where he was beltin out the gobbles. But he insisted we hunt the lower field. Rather than have a debate on it,I said sure we can set up down hill in the field from his roost. With just a bit of light I owled to him and he thundered back. We walked down and set up just below him. As we were sittin there a strange vehicle pulls up. They slammed the doors and we could barely see them comin our way. I ran up the field, and walked out in the open waving a blaze orange flag. They turned and walked really fast up to their vehicle and left in a hurry. The toms all shut down at the sound of the slamming doors and reved engine. No body has permission to hunt any of the properties inside a two mile radius. So heres a slob hunter showing a youngster how to trespass. Any how I was already a little irate by this time. And I was not happy with our setup at all. So the tom resumes his gobbling jumps off the roost and begins to hit the strut zone. Goin back and forth, never even makin any attempt to come down. We could hear his hens some 250 yds away from him. And in no hurry to get to him. Put it this way he would have been a dead bird. I gobbled at him a couple times and he came down close, but then turned and headed right for the upper foodplot. I looked at my buddy and said guess where he is goin,in a disgusted kind of way. The other gobblers were hammerin up behind us to the left. When all of a sudden boom!!! Never heard a call or anything! And again someone hunting where they weren't suppose to be. Now I'm gettin white hot pissed! After the shot all the birds went silent again. We snuck our way up to the corner of the food plot, set out the dekes. Took me another half hour to draw two shock gobbles out of the boss. Then all went dead silent ,songbirds, crows everything. Any veteran hunter knows when this happens not a good thing. We waited for two and a half hours, notta! Time was wasting away. So over to other side of the mountain we went. Heard one distant gobble sounded like a jake. Then all was quiet for the rest of the day. My buddy apologized almost non stop. I told him I knew where he was goin!! And with a big old gobbler like that, you may not get another chance at him. When I saw him through the scope at 150 yds,you could see his hooks plain as day,and had somewhere in the neighborhood of an 11 or 12 inch beard. A trophy for sure.GONE!

Went out this morning. Cold and breezy at first then ,windy and still cold. Because I wont be able to hunt first thing in Pa. I've been following the birds off the roost ,until nearly 11:00. They head to a foodplot for a short stay. Then they head to the bottom of a hardwood sided mountain. Thinkin if I can get my daughter her bird in n.y. soon after flydown. We can be in Pa within 15 minutes. I should be able to pick up the traveling flock somewhere in the hardwoods. My buddies all two of them hunting opening day, said they would stay out of there. The weather is gonna be a dramatic change. 50's today, mid 70's friday, and 80's over the weekend. Could shut the birds down or could fire them up. Guess we'll just have to wait and see. My daughter is excited! Her mouth calling is comin along good. May let her call for me in pa.
