Today was a bit interesting. Had bad weather movin in again. So decided not to fish,no sense in gettin the boat around. So I headed down to the family property. Bugs were terrible. As i walked up the trail to the top field. I found beatin down the trails with the four wheeler can benefit the scouting a bit. Tracks upon tracks. Lots of little gimper tracks too. When i got below the top field, the clouds had really set in. First I could see one outline then two,in all five outlines of deer. I walked up closer after they had passed. I looked out into the field and there stood a nice little bach group of bucks. Three were looking pretty good ,the other two looked average year and half olds. Just little forks. As I'm watchin them I here a 4 wheeler on the neighbors land. Next thing I see is a bunch of black birds flyin at me,and one big one. The neighbor bumped a small flock of turkeys. A couple landed pretty close, and didn't have a clue what I was. The hen started assembly yelps within minutes after they were scattered. I walked over to talk to the neighbor. He said,"if its deer your looking for!" "you need to start in the bottom fields!" He sad he was seeing a whole bunch of bucks and does in the bottoms. Hopefully I can get a look at some of the bucks he was talkin about. I have one in particular that got lucky last year. Who knows what he'll be this year. He's been on the property since 1 1/2 At 2 1/2 he was a flat racked 10, At 3 1/2 he was 17 inches wide had a 9 pt frame.Only saw him once early and runnin a doe the first week of november. Last year a good 10 pt frame at 4 1/2,pretty good mass and around 20 or 21 wide. I saw him 3 times. Missed him at 32 yds with the bow. And my father missed him opening day of gun season. Be curious to see what he does this year. Doubt he'll ever break the 160 mark, but I've got a score to settle with him ;D

Saw a dozen bucks together tonight in a bachelor group. Around here very uncommon. Most groups are between 4 and 8. Four were lookin very good.Wish I had permission to hunt that property! Had some time to kill. So while out cruisin around,I stopped by a new property to check it out. With the rain comin and goin, didn't feel like fishin today. With all the muddied trails it was easy to pick up on a couple travel routes. Found a couple old rubs on some fat diameter tree's. Ran into the land owner,he asked what I was up to. Told him sort of scoutin for deer. He said,"already"?? He doesn't hunt anymore, but he looked puzzled, when I told him that. He said he's been havin trouble with bears. They got into his garage and shed. Tried to get into his house one morning. Destroyed the inside of his shed I guess. Told me I need to shoot one! Anyhow found some good stand locations. Can't wait to hunt it!

This morning was pretty cool. Took my 2 or 3 day a week morning hike. First time I didn't have the camera in a while. But I was still tipped off somewhat to some deer patterns. Back in march or april,I found some good rubs from last fall, early winter. This morning saw three potentially beautiful bucks using that same area. They were traveling on the usual lightly worn trail. Didn't get a real good look at the last one,but didn't need to. Looked to me like the non-typical the locals have been talking about for 3 yrs! He's got to be at least 6 or 7 yrs old by now. It looked like velvet covered driftwood. The thick brush and foliage limited my vision. Even when he stopped to stare at me,I could hardly see all the junk. I don't think he's the one who laid down any of the rubs on the rubline last fall. I saw a good 10 do one of the 6 inch diameter rubs. But never saw the big NT in the vicinity. And neither did anyone else. But what a group of bucks!! Hopefully just one of the three will make an appearance this bow season. I did see a good group of toms on my way out. I think it was the group I heard gobble for assembly last week. They all looked like long hooked, long bearded birds. Hope they have the same mainstay come fall.

Had a great evening with the spottin scope. I watched a recently cut hay field loaded with deer. Several nice looking bucks. While sitting there at about 500 yds,I could look down on the entire field. Couldn't believe how many deer and how many different directions they came from to enter the field. At one point I was thinking with the right wind,I could slip in their some evening to maybe get a better look at a couple of those bucks. Then the deer started comin out from all the edges! Don't think it would be a good idea. If I get a chance some afternoon, may try and put a trail cam in there and leave it til the end of september. What made me decide to check this property out was a phone call from a friend of mine and the owner. He said one of the bucks he saw was the one he believes to be the buck he missed two years ago, with the muzzleloader. He was a really good buck when he missed him. A high racked 11 pt,with good mass. He was in the neighborhood of maybe 18 to 19 inches. We never saw him last season at all! He swears that it is him! And insisted I check the field. Two of the bucks I could see in the group were pretty good. But by the way he was talking I don't think they were the one he described. With that many deer on that property,I think I'm gonna keep my distance. Atleast until they change their feeding patterns and thin out.

The fishin is probably gonna take a back seat from here on out. Time to start gearin up for early goose, bow season, and turkey. Most of our goose spots look to be in good shape, quite a few birds. Have to wait til they cut some of the fields to see where they will be showin up in the morning and evenings. Trail cams should all be set up this week I think. The weather is bringing the deer out earlier in the evenings. So the spottin scope will work right now. I have to check a couple of the properties and see how the turkeys are doing. As quick as summer went by,fall will be here soon!

This morning after work went for a short walk on the stateland near the house. Took a hike back into the swamp to look over the area. Because of all the rain the swamp was deeper than I have ever seen it! Theres actually two swamps linked together by a narrow beaver channel. That is the crossing point for a majority of the deer in here,a narrow little funnel. The further I walked into the funnel, the ground became more bare. So the tracks stood out really good." And the mosquitos were obviously outrageous!" But the tracks were all adult deer, more than likely a small bachelor group. One sizeable track broke off from the rest. I followed it for a short distance. It lead into a stand of big hemlocks,on the eastern end of the swamp. After walking by several rubs from last year. I started thinking he has got to be the buck, that I got a brief glimpse of,on a snowy late muzzleloader Day. So I didnt dare go any further. Instead started looking on the outskirts for a good ambush or starting point. And profusely itching my my legs. Next time Jeans are in order! Not too many folks venture into the swamp,it was the two places on the state land, that you don't see a whole lot of human activity. I'll wait a week and maybe put a trail cam in there. hopefully figure somethin out.

Well for not putting the trail cams on any food plots. Some of the younger bucks made an appearance anyway! Saw 8 longbeards today! They all looked like jakes from this past spring. All except for 2. They were both more than likely, three or four year olds. Pretty good spurs. They were feeding in a cut hay field close to home at five in the afternoon. With the trail cams out this week. It is gonna test my patience. Wanting to go check them out already and it has only been 1 day!! Have too refrain from going into these places regularly.

Nearly 300 deer pics in three weeks. A lot of the same deer frequenting the same areas, but I'll take em. Mostly daylight pics, which is a good thing. Got two more stands to put in and I'm done, messin with em! Just hope some of those same deer show them selves. Pretty excited to sit in the stands come archery season. But even though I'm getting pics. I don't want to get my hopes too high. Things can change! I was also treated to an unsuspecting trespasser. Who decided to ride his 4 wheeler in front of the camera! I've been trying to catch him for a couple of years. Especially since some of my stands came up missin!! He hasn't a clue! Pictures don't lie! So there are other benefits to having trail cams!

Today was a good day. My daughter and I did a little scoutin. We were tryin to find some new spots for the trail cams. With all the rain we had during the week. It made for some good mud on the deer runs. I talked to a guy on the neighboring property. He was very helpful in my quest to get a look at the supposed big bucks roaming around up there. He said he saw them the other day in the rain, feeding in the field. All he said was they were giant bucks. No talk of points or spreads! Told him I think I'm the only one who hasn't seen them. But after we found some spots to put the cameras in, I was just fine with there locations. With the weather getting into the 90's this week during the day and 70's at night. There was very little deer movement during daylight hours. Suppose to cool a down a bit it should make a difference!
