This morning I had planned to go after a large flock of Turkey I had been told about. There are supposed to be 25 to 40 strutting Toms and around a hundred or more hens. I was getting ready to go when Turkey came out in front of my house, no cars for a change so they strutted to the road, crossed the bridge then hung a left (North) and passed my house on the East side so now they are on my side of the road at least for today. Hoping they will find my food plot and stay. Left on my big flock hunt and only saw 3 hens about 200 yards away streaking across an old cornfield. Ended up driving back home and seeing some other Turkey to shoot at and of course some yard birds to practice on. These birds were down the creek 1/2 mile from my house to the South, can hunt them if they move 200 yards West of this location. There were 2 decent Gobblers in this flock, probably 2 year olds. This Dove was my practice shot for the morning, trying to get the camera settings right and with broken cloud cover today that didn't work so well either.

Steve, its looking like you will have some nice birds close to your place. Those two gobblers look pretty good to me. Some long range shooting with the sigma. That's where those extra 100mm's really start paying off. That dove posed really nice for you. When does your season open? Ours opens next Tuesday. Haven't seen hide nor hair of a turkey for quite sometime now. Hope they start showing up soon.

Terry, to give you an idea of how and why these look the way they do, 1st pic is with the Sigma 500mm at 300 yds, cropped some. The 2nd pic is with 18-135 at 500 yds also cropped some, third pic Sigma at 500mm at 500 yards ,cropped about 20%. The last one of the Dove is at 30 feet again the Sigma at 475mm cropped about 10%. First and last pics shot through front door glass, all of them hand held. Should get some good pics when I can get outdoors, get closer and use some support and good light would be nice, just can't seem to get it all together but heading out to practice now.
Youth season opens this sat April 12, regular season opens April 21st. Youth can hunt all day for 2 days then the regular season closes each day at 1PM. Our season is 3 weeks long. We have several 2 year old birds but I'm having trouble getting them on my land. As the season goes along and leaves appear this can change.

Steve, that's amazing to get fairly decent shots at that distance and through glass on top of it all. Will be great to see some fifty yard photos of those birds. Hopefully they will give you the opportunity. Out again today, and still haven't found any birds for next weeks opener.

Terry thought I'd let you take a look at this set up ^^^. Me with my Sigma 150-500 extended on the mono pod, then when I collapse the leg I carry it over my shoulder like I often do a gun, it becomes very comfortable this way. I took these by setting up the other 60D w/18-135 on my tripod and using a wireless remote trigger. This will come in handy if we should harvest a bird this season and want everyone in the photo, even the camera man. It is much easier to set up with two people than it is by ones self or if I had a bird to lay down to frame would work well too, lol.
The vest I have on is a safari vest with a lot of pockets, l carry many small items in it for my cameras, can grab it, maybe add something out of the camera bag for a fast out the door shoot so don't carry the whole bag that weighs 28 lbs. The patches on it are of National parks we have been to and have photos of. Kind of weird idea but just looking at it brings back a lot of memories and when wearing it a lot of conversations among strangers have came up.

I like your monopod set up Steve. What monopod and head are you using? I have a pretty flimsy pod. Also like the idea of the wireless remote. Again, which one are you using? Was the little chick shot using the monopod? Balance and ease are very much an important item for sure. Yours looks very good, as evidenced by your very nice pics. Thanks for sharing these pics and your setups. Looks like you must have retired your horse drawn tiller. Any birds out today?

Terry, I have the Manfrotto 680B monopod that came with the 234RC head on it, it has 3 extensions and flip lever releases. It doesn't get many raves from the pros as you know but it is sturdy and reasonable price.Came with one plate for the camera too. My tripod is the Manfrotto 580xprob, and it is very sturdy and very heavy just like everyone says it is. Hard for me to drop 600 or more on C Fiber pods then throw on an ATV or horse and tear through the woods.
I have a wired manuael release and also the wireless remote release, both are Neewer brand from Amazon around 13 dollars each. Haven't tested the wireless for distance past about 35 feet but I got it just to get in family pics and to shoot hunting harvest pics, looks like it will work fine for that if we can now be successful on a hunt. The wired release I got and use just to play around taking photos of the moon, lightning while on the tripod, haven't done that much but plan to.

Yes Scott you would have a great time I think with a rig like this from your yard. Heck I can't get close to a turkey today but we have been after them and will be until dark. We are seeing some today, had good gobbling early but the wind is blowing hard so they shut their beaks.
