Alrthy all, here is a VERY STICKY question that I have been mulling around in my head. First off as many might know VT doesn't allow baiting. Now here is the ?, ----> If I use a cover sent That will attract bear is it illegal? I'm stuck, I don't see where it could be considered baiting due to sent being on personal self. But others may say other wise. suggestions with my dilemma are greatly welcomed!!

Jonesy, what in the heck are you wearing, Honey. I would hardly think that wearing a scent would be considered baiting. Do your regs speak specifically as to what constitues baiting? I believe I would carefully re-read them and if you are still concered, I would just call your Fish & Game dept. and ask them what constitutes baiting. Good Luck with that bear hunt.

this is from th 09 digest--- Hunters may not use bait or a baited area to take a bear. A "baited area" is defined as an area where meat, carrion, honey, or any other substance capable of luring or attracting bear has been placed or deposited.
With that, It's saying I can't use a cover sent.

I wouldn't think it would be illegal! As it is here in n.y. you can't bait deer, bear or wildlife. But we can use doe in heat, acorn cover scent, And other cover scents that could entice a deer or bear to come in and investigate. If they sell it in your state,in my opinion then it should be legal to use. If it is not sold in your state, that means its against the law to use or purchase. Another thing if it is something that a deer or bear can consume. Actually eat and fill their bellies, thats baiting! If it is just a scent blowing in the breeze, should be legal. It's gettin close for you to whack one! Good luck to ya!

As kt29 stated you could contact the game dept to feel more at ease but I would not consider it baiting . I consider baiting would be placing food in an area that would not only put out scent but hold the animal still in an area for a long period of time and draw them back whenever they wanted another meal.
We cannot bait anything here in Mo, but Salt licks, mineral blocks, any kind of scent on you or used like making mockscrapes on the ground are legal so at least my state agrees that baiting is actual food stuff- but Mo is a long way from VT. Let us know what you find out and good luck hunting.

Baiting Bears in North Carolina is not allowed, I have a good friend that would bait all summer long and when he baited his spot he put some type of spice he got from the grocery store on his boots and on the trees in the woods. When the season opened he shut off the bait and when he went to his stand he would put that spice on his boots and trees just like he did in the summer. The wildlife officers ran across him in the woods and charged him with taking bear of bait and convicted him in court. I dont know what the spice he used was but it really worked he took several bear of the past 15 years. After he got the ticket he guit hunting all together. North Carolina does allow you to bait bears with grain(corn) and turn dogs loose on the bait piles. The bear of course runs up a tree and it is legal to shoot them out of the tree but not over the corn pile. Be careful sometime the law is not very clear. My buddy would never have done anything he thought was against the law.

He did fight it in district court and lost, would have cost him to much to take it to superior court and have a jury trail. The way I read the written law I didn't think he had done anything wrong, but it sure cost him. Also because he was a Deputy Sheriff, if he had been convicted in Superior Court he would have lost his job.
