Thanks 4pointer for the good wishes, I need them. Today Oct 27 is looking more like deer season. Cool frosty morning, 25 degrees and calm, deer were on the move. Tim took a doe this morning with his longbow, made a good shot, she went 60 yards and he saw her fall from his stand. Quite an accomplishment for a homemade bow, arrows fletched with turkey feathers he has found on his farm, cut and glued to cedar arrows, zwickey broad heads. I saw 8 turkey, 3 doe and a good sized 6 point. The 6 point made a scrape out in front of me 70 yards. Reports from several guys this morning that they saw bucks chasing does. The time is near.

Getting better all the time, missed the morning hunt but this evening couldn't get to the blind because deer pinned me down. Finally managed to get behind the blind, wrong side of fence for good pics but shot a few through the wires. The double wire fence Dad built 40 years ago sure causes problems sometimes, may take some barbed wire off and make a hole to get to the blind from the back. By the time dusk came 18 does and 3 bucks had came out, nothing real impressive yet but they will show sometime. Also they were all too far out for the bow, nearest one about 45 to 50 yards. Made a great exit from the blind area without spooking a single deer when I called it a day, then when I got to the truck and was trying to shut the camera down realized I couldn't see and had no glasses. In a hurry I drove the truck to the blind and was lucky enough to find my glasses in the field next to the fence, getting old is so much fun these days. The deer didn't like the truck in their territory and all ran off into the timber to the West. Taking tomorrow off from hunting, than look out deer, I plan to hunt hard for the next 10 days. First doe early evening. This little buck came out just at dusk, enough time to shoot the bow but not enough light for good shots with the Sigma 150-500, tried a few anyway. Full moon was rising at 6PM over the cedars by my new blind, saw 21 deer total this evening. Making a prediction that late morning hunting will be the best in the coming week. Plan to still be in the woods around 10 to 11 AM, think it will be good. Will see how this turns out.

Tim took another doe today at 11 AM with his homemade longbow and cedar arrows. He is 2 for 2, not bad for the weapon of his choice. Said he saw a monster bedded down, made a stalk on him but at the last minute the old buck slipped away not to be seen again. Took the wife to the city today for a doctor visit after that I bought some new binocs and a camera bag to carry the big lens in. I should be set for a week of deer hunting now. Full moon, freezing temps and clear skies here tonight, tomorrow may be a good day for deer hunting.

Tuesday morning 10-30-12, hunted 4 hours, saw 30 deer, one was a large 7 point, another buck was the 4x2 all the rest were doe and button bucks. Evening hunt, 1 1/2 hours North of the house, saw one spike buck, he was slightly crippled in his back legs, also saw 8 turkey, passed the shot because would have lost the arrow for sure even with a direct hit.

Wed, 10-31-12 Went to East farm, saw 4 doe on the way in, at 8.00AM a nice 8 point came by, gave me a 40 yard shot but passed as I want a larger buck, may regret later but thought he lacked enough mass, small body looked real young. Thought he would score 120, a perfect rack, but the rut starting want to hold off awhile longer. About the same time saw a coyote come in behind me, never got drawn on him, tried but he got away unharmed.
Around 9:15 went to the barn where I saw a very good 8 point cross the West pasture, no shot was possible on him but may have tried him if given a chance, he looked more massive than the first buck. On my way home was driving past the Oak tree where 2 doe were standing and the large 7 pt was with them, when he saw my truck he went for the timber fast as if he knows his skin is in danger. The doe stood still while I drove by at 20 yards. This evening, did not hunt, watched from the porch at home, saw 3 doe, 1 turkey and 1 bowhunter. The hunter is hunting on the neighbor to the West, hope he puts some pressure on that area and the deer move East to my ditch.

Looks like it is just a matter of time before you connect Steve. Lots of nice deer on your place. Fun seeing your pics with the Sigma. Gets pretty tough when the light is fading. Keep them coming and Good Luck.

Terry you know it is tough with no light and that big, slow lens, I also have trouble with my own eyes, can't tell when I'm focused in the low light, been shooting manual, may have to go AV mode, or something else.
This morning's hunt was terrible, the weather was perfect, no wind, 36 degrees, few clouds but the deer were not moving. I hunted until 10AM and never saw a deer, did see 15 turkey and tried for them but got skunked. They keep disappearing into the cedars West of the well. Did not hunt in the evening

Hunted hard all day and I only saw 3 doe while in the woods. Tim and I hunted together after 10 AM until almost 5, rattled many times, no luck. When I came out of the woods this AM, had just got back to the house and Keith called, said he and Shawn were watching 5 doe and a 10 point that would score 150-160 behind my garage. I did not get out soon enough to see them, by the time I made it to the top of the bank at the haystack they had jumped onto Mike's place. Did not hunt here this evening as planned but tomorrow, Nov 3, my Grandson and I will be out there looking for him with a .243 in hand. Youth season opens Sat, so will see what happens.

Youth season opened today, took Blake with me behind the house, hunted until 11 AM saw no deer. Keith said one small 8 pt crossed off my place at the East bridge when he fed cattle but we never saw it. went to the East farm and saw one small doe, weather was nice, maybe too nice, mid 50's during the day, 30 this AM. Don't know what is going on, morning hunts should be real good according to my methods of calculation but I'm very wrong this time. Maybe tomorrow, we have 6 in the yard now, one is a buck, looks like an 8 pt so we plan to be out after them again tomorrow.

Started off seeing 2 doe running fast behind the garage then a buck walked around in front of the house and of course we were not on the front porch where we needed to be. After better light I chose to back up further in the field and call. On the second call a very high racked buck came over the hill quick, I wouldn't let Blake shoot as it wasn't safe because of Mike's horses behind him. For ten minutes the buck circled but Blake never got a shot, it was possible but he just doesn't have enough experience to get on them quick. Later saw another doe, it too made an escape. We went to the East farm and immediately saw 2 good bucks, one had a high rack the other wide rack. We were in the yard when first saw them, made a move to get in position but never did any good on them. Also saw a doe along the road by the Oak tree.
This evening I hunted by myself, had a small 7 pt come to the stand and 2 doe. Blake hunted here at home with his Dad and they didn't see any.
Tim's daughter Holly took a very good buck from their farm, a 9 point that is going to score a solid 150 looks like. The deer was old and big bodied, probably well over 250 lbs, long shot in timber, just a great job for a 13 year old.She has taken several deer before so starting to be a seasoned pro looks like.

It never ends, the Rancher just called, said the 160 inch 10 point came out in front of my house in the bean field 30 minutes before dark. I was at the East farm and Blake was in the ladder stand 600 yards to the North. Some body here has to learn that hunting from my porch and within 20 feet of the coffee pot is the best place to be, now I should take my own advice!

4pointer, I saw 2 bucks today with my name on them and I got close to one of them, they are big, big, big!
This AM it was raining, not hard just steady, thought it would be a good morning but wrong again. One doe was all I saw so came home and worked on the deer barn for a few hours. Needed to take a trailer to the East farm and move a tractor into the barn so set out to do this at 2:45. When I passed the Oak tree a doe jumped the fence in front of me, spun and went back the way she had came from. Of course standing on the other side was the monster I've been looking for. Can't say for sure how many points he had but looked like he had 12, he was extremely massive, largest buck I've seen on that farm for 25 years, he is approaching B&C size and a body to match. Unhooked the trailer and ditched all other plans, drove to the Oak tree, parked and headed into the timber in hopes of being downwind and ahead of the buck. As soon as I stepped into the woods a huge 8 point came walking through , he was 45 yards at one time and in the clear, I opted to call to him and try to gain 10 yards or more but he never paid any attention to my call and instead began getting further away by the angle he was taking. Made a bad decision here maybe, will never know, with the light mist I wanted a great shot on him not a marginal one and felt like I needed to be closer. Made it to the stand and waited until dark , no more deer showed themselves all evening. Came home to a driveway full of deer, they are coming from the South looks like, a difficult direction for me to hunt. Tomorrow is a new day, will be trying them again.
