I'm not sure if this thread belongs here. so if it needs to be moved, please feel free to do so. I apologize ahead of time.
Lets lay out the first scenario. Yep it happened to me twice in the same day.
I have access to about 1200 acres of private land in western Oklahoma. I have been hunting this place for about 22 years.
I want to give you an idea of how the area that I was hunting yesterday morning is layed out. There is about 80 acre wooded area that the deer hang out at during the night time and to the North of that 80 acre wood lot is a several hundred acre, heavily wooded area, where the deer and my turkey spend the daylight hours. It has several Meadows, draws, creek bottoms, and a few ponds.
Between these two wooded areas is a travel corridor. This corridor is a narrow line of black jack trees and western red cedars nestled in a small valley. The 80 acre lot sets south of the main daytime area with the travel corridor connecting the two areas. I hope that you have a good idea how this small area sits.
Now for the last 22 years I have hunted this little area and the deer always do the same thing. They spend the night in the 80 acre wood lot and when light comes they move back to the main bedding area via the travel corridor. This is a place that I like to take my children and nephews to. They always get to see deer and always get to try to harvest a doe and maybe a buck if they are lucky.
Yesterday morning My brother in-law wanted to take his boy out to try to get him a deer. I told him I had a great place for him to go. I had been watching this corridor and have been seeing a 140 to 150 class main frame 10 point and several does travel south to north every morning about 6:45 AM - 7:00 AM. The conditions that morning were: 34 degrees, clear, north wind 5-10 mph. We had arrived to the blind about one hour before sunlight. We sat up on the far east side of the 80 acre wood lot watching the travel corridor, 233 yards from the tree line. As the sun came up my nephew got his gun ready. 7:00 Am passed an no deer ever came out. Me scratching my head in disbelief, About 7:30 we see seven does coming in around the tree line from the south west. They were going around the corridor. They arrived on the tree line at the edge of the North main bedding area and played for about thirty minutes before going into the timber. I knew right then what had happened. Something was in that corridor, but what? About 8:30 we saw a glimpse of orange in a cedar that was in the tree line. I am now getting hot. I get up and walk down to this person and ask him who gave him permission to be here. After listening to him stumble over his words and a few names that had no connection to the property, I escorted him off of the property and told him to never come back. If I caught you here again I would turn his tag # and his "probably fake name" in to the real owner of the property.
Why is it, that if a person has a rifle, bow, ect. and a tag he or she calls themselves a hunter. A person like this might be a hunter, but they are not a Woodsman.
I understand that we all must learn somehow and learning from our mistakes is sometimes the best education we as human beings can get.
Maybe if he had permission I wouldn't have been so p#@##@, or maybe if he hadn't been a 50 year old man I could understand the ignorance about how to hunt.
I believe 80% of all hunters are also good woodsmen. They go about it the right way or at least they try to make a good effort. They are considerate of other hunters, livestock, landowners, ect..
Its the other 20% that make it hard for you and me to gain access to great private land. They make it hard for our children to have the opportunity's to also have access to private land.
For those of you that reads this and who are new to the sport of hunting, ask permission before you go onto someone Else's land. Not only are you hurting yourself and your reputation, but you are hurting the people that do have the permission to be there. Also, you might be a hunter, but it takes experience to be a woodsman.
