Today being September 19th, 2005, sixteen days after the season opened I will re-cap all of the events. Opening day found Raymond and myself at Carl's' farm in Hebron. He has grown 140 acres of corn destined for Kellogg's, a different type of corn with only one or two ears of corn per stalk.
Raymond has consistently hunted the three fingers and I have hunted the large section of woods toward the back of the property. Kevin Shoemaker has blazed a trail in the corn, out the back of the barn, straight towards Mr. Roberts' house. He has placed a salt lick at the end of the field in the back of the property down towards the creek bed, along with a climbing tree stand. Kevin got busted (winded) twice by a large buck behind his tree stand creek side. He hasn't sighted the buck since being busted. Friday at 10:30 while getting out of his truck a large buck snorted him out. The buck was standing or bunked in the corn near our parking area. (I suspect this may be the buck that Michael Horwitz sighted last gun season but didn't shoot.)
Raymond has seen deer, mostly does in the fingers, although he did see a large bodied deer there once. He got a shot at two does in the large body of woods coming in at the back by the third finger, but missed.
I jumped two large bucks Saturday the tenth, in the hollow by the middle of the field. They had been feeding in the corn but now were feeding on green burr oaks.
At Alex's we have sighted deer at the top of the large hollow, by the bales of hay,(an 8-pointer) and in the field. On Saturday the 18th we saw a 4-pointer with a heavily beamed buck inside the field. The big buck was moving from the woods into the field at 7:25pm. Saw two does feeding around the small pond at the top of the hill at 7:55pm.
The weather has been nice but hot in the mid eighties. The full moon began Sunday, September 18th, with some rain and somewhat cooler temperatures, upper seventies during the days with temperatures at night in the upper sixties and lower seventies.
Deep Breath... E-x-h-a-l-e... Patience...
Outlook is good and promising. Raymond and myself will hunt Mikes' place to see if we can get a shot at Mr. Monster...
Lowell put us, Bob, Austin, Raymond, and myself in for a quota hunt. More later...

Saturday the twenty fourth found me walking to my deer stand an hour before daylight. Little did I know I wouldn't make it. There was a half moon and the path was well lit. After twenty minutes of sneaking I realized that I was momentarily side tracked to the wrong hollow. Never again. I still managed to see deer close to my stand and behind the aerated pond.
Monday the twenty sixth my son and me went to the farm in Dry Ridge where we had previously sighted a monster buck. After hunting most of the day we hadn't seen him or any other deer. We've hunted twenty some days since September the third, this was our first day of not seeing any deer.
I feel a doe comin' on...

Well a doe, actually two came to my stand at 6:24pm. I seen them walking to the aerated pond as I was climbing into my stand. They came in as if they were on a string. My huntin' buddy (son) wasn't with me as he had class. Being it was a long drag back to the truck I opted to wait since it was the first night with my new stand placement.
Two more does walked to the pond right to left but never approached my stand.
Tomorrow morning we have a men's breakfast where I get the opportunity to tell the story of how Smitty got his trophy mount. He will be at the University of Tennessee and Mississippi game.
Tomorrow, October the 1st is opening day for Ohio and Indiana, decisions,decisions... We will go to Ohio since it will be Raymond's first time there.
Looking forward...

Smitty called this morning whispering. I realized he had probably popped one. Sure enough a couple of does trespassed near his climber.
Raymond and myself rode back to "Dead Timber Ridge," to haul the doe out. Sure enough thirty yards from his stand the deceased doe was ready to be dragged out.
Man, I'm playing catch up...

Been huntin' several times since the last post. Saturday after the mens breakfast I went to Ohio to hunt opening day. Saw a large buck on the main trail with a doe , couldn't get a shot. I walked further up the trail and almost stepped on a doe bunked down. Looks promising...
Probably will hunt Ohio this Saturday since a new hunter to the Hebron farm thumped the monster buck I had seen, all the way in the back of the farm just inside the woods. They never did locate or find him. There still may be a chance that he survived.
My new stand location is looking good at Hebron. Been seein' a lot of does at dusk by the aerated pond. Sunday, October 2nd, as I was walking into the tree stand I went straight to Kevin's salt lick, then dropped over into the next hollow, just to mix it up a little. I saw a large 3-pointer crossing the creek bed when a branch fell from a tree and a blue jay started to squawk. As he looked in that direction he started to snort, three times. I noticed a larger buck with him that wasn't as alarmed.
Walking away from them I noticed a fawn and doe crossing another creek bed trying to make their way up to the aerated pond. A home owner was making noise and the deer seemed to hesitate going that direction. Making my way to my tree stand three does moved right to left near the pond. No other action...
Talked to Jack Jones at Hunter's Edge and he indicated that he saw two 140 class bucks "goin' at it" today at 9:00am October 6th, for twenty five minutes. On the way out he located 12 to 15 scrapes. Lookin' Good...

A new season begins to ferment in my thoughts. Memories of last season still illuminates the hollow halls of my mind. It causes wisdom to draw new boundaries of what I am willing and wanting to harvest. The new season has begun for me and I am open to new found ideas gleaned from last years adventures with son and friends. I will take more photos and live in the power of the moment... Come on out Monster Bucks...

Kentucky's spring squirrel season opens this Saturday, hopefully I will be out at Mike's farm lookin up in the trees but my main concern is to place a trail camera in the monster bucks bedroom.
Yes, I will be breaking one of my rules... If I can set up early and figure out how he comes in I believe I can get the shot I looked for all last season...
I know he is still there... Kentucky's new state record.

I just can't seem to ever stop thinking about hunting. It's hard core and I never want to lose this gift and will cultivate it all of my days. I haven't been into the deep woods yet but I think of it often... I begin to consider "deer stand placement" for this coming harvest and all that comes to mind is, will The Monster show up again? Through all the years I recall the tree stands that withstood the test of time, the weather element and more importantly why is this tree stand here? I have been honored through the years to have sat in some remarkable tree stands that were built by someone else's hands and mind... probably even gone from this earth. The land I sit on has since been sold twice. Ahh... to ponder and to contemplate life and all of its beauty from a tree stand is, is well, words have a way of diluting and stealing from its loveliness. Alex, I love you like a brother and I'm glad that I call you friend!

Father's day is coming up at weeks end and as a father I certainly have a lot to be grateful for. I've tried to teach my children many different things but usually at the end of the day I begin to wonder... My success's have come in small steps, even in stumbling I have found the pearls of wisdom. This past deer season I remember sitting in a barn on the Ohio river wondering do my children respect and love there father? Really? All of a sudden I had a supernatural feeling of being outside of this barn looking in. Looking in to what? Is this my soul and very heart? Is this the true condition of my heart God? God? Yes, I said His name and at that moment His Spirit spoke to my empty heart. I was broken... But, I was know longer by myself in this empty place... It was a God moment... I've got to get back into the woods.

It feels great to be out walkin' in "my happy huntin' ground." Went to Mikes place and placed a trail cam in the monsters bunk. I may have placed it too close to the trail. A few days will tell...
With the lazy hazy days of summer up on us I've been spendin' time fishin' Kentucky farm ponds. Been doing fairly well...
But, I've been thinking about the state record that got away from me many years ago with someone else tagging it. Would he fess up if I confronted him today? What would I gain?
Probably the only known cure or perhaps the best cure is to get another one... Come on September the third!

I went deep into the woods today to check on the trail cam that I placed at Mike's place. Several photo's were spent but not enough to get processed. I placed the trail cam by the salt lick to see what has been visiting it. The number on the counter read 6 or 9. It felt great to be at one with the woods and leave all pre-conceived ideas and baggage that hinders ones walk with Mother Nature. I was completely in the moment. The woods was wet from last nights rainfall and the humidity combined made the moisture cling to every element... My goal this year is to get serious and seal the deal. Not to be just an observer but to partake, to drink in from the Creator's hand His offering... Stay Sharp, Stay Focused...

Sign of the times... As I was going into Mikes place the High Jumper 4-Wheelers placed this sign at the beginning of the road in hopes of stifling some of the unwanted traffic. It's still a gravel road and I hope it remains that way. I'm anticipating what could be on my trail cam. I need to remember to take an extra roll of film to replace the exposed roll. Come on out monster! 7-31-130

Went down to Mike's to get film out of the trail cam yesterday, Friday morning, and when I went to rewind it I opened the back of the camera and the film was still there being exposed... I managed to save three maybe four photo's. Three of the photo's had at least two different bucks in them and one doe.
One picture had two bucks in it but the exposure was to bad to see the larger bucks rack. July 26th and 28th were the dates on picture. I placed the cam in the monsters bedroom Monday, July 24th. I then moved it to the salt lick on Monday the 31st.
After I realized the film had been over exposed I left it at the salt lick with new film and a speed of 800. Today being Saturday August 5th, I'll leave it there until I get down there this week in the evening and move it back to the monster's bedroom.
The large bucks appear to be entering the bunk from the small hollow on the left of the knuckle. All wasn't lost even if I didn't get to see Mr. Big... Side note: Rachel had car accident last night and has hairline fracture in her jawbone from airbag deployment. 8-5-153

Went to Mike's to see how many photo's I had on my trail cam, to my surprise I never had one. It's hard to believe but I went ahead and moved it to the very spot that I saw the monster's son walking away from me.
I investigated a little closer to look at the feeder someone had placed on my side of the property and soon realized it hadn't been used recently. I had previously thought the deer was leaving the feeder. He just happened to be walking by.
While scoutin' I took my .22 pistol for squirrels but didn't spot any. I called the local conservation officer to see if he couldn't hook my son and myself up with a farmer to gun hunt on some new property.
Dennis Davis was very friendly and offered advice on huntin' local WMA's Kebler and Rich. To my astonishment over 400 acres back up to Alex's property and I can come in on Rt. 609 to access it or go in off of Alex's road. That will be some exciting all day huntin'. Better start lookin' for a quality GPS so I can get in and out without getting lost.
Hopefully the cam will have some photo's and then I can to move it to Carl's in Hebron. At least that's the plan now... Stay with the plan! 165

Gettin' ready to go to work this morning the Boss calls,"lets go squirrel huntin," How can a man say no... I headed down to the salt lick and back up the hill in the field to the monsters hall way to the Master bedroom. I placed the trail cam for the last time last Saturday August 19th along the fence line where I last saw son of monster. As I dropped down into the hollow I heard my Boss' (Smitty) shotgun go off. One down. As I slowly made my way through the woods I again was in total Awe of nature. What a beautiful day! We got there right at 10:00am and it was warming up fast the temperature was at 75 degrees this am but was to go to 89 degrees this pm. About 12:30 I made my way around the gnarly knuckle and looked down into the creek bed and two deer were moving slowly and decidedly from a water hole. They had no idea I was there. At ten after one I was back at Smitty's truck. After a few bob white calls we hook up and as Smitty is walking up he told me he missed one and then surprisingly pulls five of them out of his back pocket. He's a hound dog. Gettin' film processed tonight...166
