Man I miss a samich made with moms "tough" YET VERY FRESH home ground wheat bread You could put any thing in there and it would hold up to the tasty end! the wheat was givin to us by the farmers at the grain elevator that were lined up the street and up a hill, the tractors and trucks would start to chug down the hill and crash into one another from all the weight in the wagons. We would stack bricks and boards etc up the street and block their tires so they could let off the brakes and go to the elevator to hang out awaiting their turn. In turn we would end up with 10-15 5gallon buckets of whole wheat and grind like crazy!!! We had to eat fresh beef in trade for me doing chores and our milk and eggs were farm fresh pay to me. I was a 11-13 year old kid doing my part and put a few out of season game animals in the pot as well (I could not afford a license for in season hunting either.) Mom made butter from the WHOLE milk I brought home, honey from the bee keeper for me helping to move hives and for keeping sparrows, red wing blackbirds and crows from his hives. Some was added to the REAL butter for fresh honey butter. Our land lord was a young guy running a small feeder pig operation 2.5 miles from our house at an old barn he rented from another farmer. I was always wanting to help to be working in ag, I did daily chores and he would come down for shots, and other tasks that he preferred to do over having a kid do it. It was in mich. and the barn was unheated so you had to be there to make sure the piglets found the heatlamp etc. I loved it even though I was riding a bicycle in the freezing winter night and had school the next day. He gave me 2 pigs at a time to raise as my own as a way to say thanks, my family would take enough orders for pork from family and friends to cover the butcher bill and we kept the rest. The family (as did others) had a tradition of going "coonin' " apples from all the local groves once a year. It was a small amount from each... yes it was wrong but back then there may be a person from the target grove involved in the hyjinx. mom would make apple sauce, pie, jelly, apple butter, fritters and more so as to use every apple and don't forget homemade candied and carmel apples. Now that i look back... I MISS BEING POOR!!!P.S. Muscovy duck tastes great after 5-7 days without meat! Brent
