Well.....with deer season quickly approaching the finish, I have started my "off seeason" shopping for a new .44 Magnum hunting pistol. Primarily a whitetail deer weapon for those sub 75 yards shots. I cruised over to www.gunbroker.com and reviewed the availability of everything from Redhawks to Bisleys to 629 Smiths. The revolver I would like to purchase is the S&W Performance Center 44 Magnum Limited Edition Hunter. Is this a good choice for my intended use? What about those new monsters like the 500 S&W? Overkill? Thank you for your help. - Sloppy She will be mine......one day:

Sloopster, i am thinking the individual wepaon fits each person differently. I think this is especially true for handguns. For example, I cannot shoot a Desert Eagle worth a piddle. My hands are to small for the gun. I can shoot a .44 Redhawk like a madman and do so very comfortably. You can not go wrong with the 629, but I think the Ruger can do the same thing for you for good deal less money. The .454 Casull's .480's and .500's will definitely get the job done, but managing VERY SUBSTANTIAL RECOIL with these loads has been a problem for even the most experienced shooters from what I have read and heard. Ammo is pretty expensive too. Factory Ammo for the .500 runs in the $2.50 per shot range!

It ain't my style. But, it should sure get the job done! I'm kinda partial to single shots and single actions.

I have a 629 Magna Classic, I carried that thing with me all over AK. It even spent two weeks at the bottom of the Chatanicka River, long stor, point is dont go canoeing on a float trip just after break up with a person who says they are excellent conoers, that was a miserable hunt (which was cut in half over that) and all I had after that was a bow, at least he still had his rifle. I got it back out with a chain, some rope and the biggest trebble hooks I could find. Pulled it out not a piece of rust, and fired it and it fired. I love that gun. I dont think you would need anything more than that Sloppy. It will be enough for you to pack as a side arm in bear country and just right for what you want it for.
