This ordeal actually began two weeks prior.I invited a young man, who's father started him out hunting and fishing. And unfortunately alcohol took over.To get him out in the woods
We get get to the timber and i get him a a stand and then get in mine about 500 yds apart. It was 3:30 in the afternoon and the weather was hot for Oct.Temps were pushing towards the 80's.After a couple hours of sitting and enjoying all the sounds and smells, that golden hour feel amongst us.I reached into my backpack and pulled the grunt tube out.And gave a couple soft grunts. And sat back and listened as my eyes scanned through the brush.I could hear the faint sound of a squirrel rustling in the leaves behind me.But i'm focused in the other direction watching the trail.I even started cussing that squirrel for making racket,i want to hear the deer.Well that squirrel walked under my stand a past me.To my amazement it was a 10 pt buck i had thought was a squirrel the whole time.At this point he is only 8 yds from my stand. And i sat motionless, and waitted for him to make a little more distance between us.He was so close i didn't want to chance even a creek. At 20 yds where i had made a mark in the dirt with my boot heal,I made a mouth bleat. That turned him 180 degrees straight towards me.
I picked a spot at the front of the shoulder and lower neck, and released. The arrow went high and struck him higher in the neck.He turned and bolted.
I then gave him 30 minutes.I saw the arrow bury deeply and was sure,i got a good hit.I walked to Jefferys stand and got him and told him of the deer i put a hit on.We went back to the trail picked up the bloodtrail and followed.I had good blood for about 50 yds, then it got harder and harder to spot droplets.Hours of circling and grid walking i could not locate the buck i was sure would have fallen.I decided to get him the night and resume the search in the morning. With the aid of another friend the next morning
we extended the search and into the crop feilds fencelines. He was no where to be found.
I was sick to my stomache, and yet couldn't believe he could have survived that hit.
I didn't even pick my bow up for a week after that incident.I kept telling myself i was to impatient and should of held out for a broadside or quarting away shot.
I pulled myself togather and decided i needed to move my stand 100 yds from where it was now placed.Once i had moved it i gave it 4 days. Then went back for an afternoon hunt again.
Again it was another hot afternoon, sweat was beading on my forehead. At 6 pm i took my antlers and grunt tube and tickled the tines togather and grunted some.In five minutes time i could see a deer making its way towards me.I couldn't see whay it was yet but it was coming and i was ready. At 26 yds i could see the deer supported a nice rack.not huge but he was a muture deer, had a grey face and a sway back.I drew and let her fly. This time the arrow hit with pin point accuracy, and the buck disappeared within seconds into the thick dense entranglement of brush.Again i gave him 30 minutes then climbed down from my stand.A heavy bloodtrail lead me right to my falling prey about 40 yds away.I walked up to him and lifted his head to give him a good look over. And low and behold,an arrow shaft broken off was in it's neck.My arrow shaft !!
Oh the relief i felt when i realized i just had gotten a second chance at the same buck.
There is a lesson to be learn from this hunt, don't allow yourself to rush your judgement, shot placement is critical,i knew it before i released that first arrow. But thought i had a "marginal" quartering towards me shot. That i could pull off.
Bottom line is we owe it to the animak to make a quick and clean kill with every shot.
