Here is my story of the season and the story of this turkey.Sorry about the long story:It has been a long season this year. With lots of wind and rain. The birds where just not gobbling good for me this season on the days that I was hunting.I came close in late March in the low lands of South Carolina.Where I worked three longbeards into range but could not see them for a shot as they strutted and drummed behind some thick stuff.I did hear some good gobbling the first week of hunting at my hunt club in South Carolina which opened on April 1.In North Carolina I did not hear a gobble until April 23.That same day I did saw a couple of hens and one turkey that was white looking. I think it was a hen or jake I could not tell .On Friday April 29 2005 I was hunting in area I call The Beechnut Holler.I got a good longbeard in this holler last year on opening day.It was a good area.I got to my hunting spot in the holler about 8:30a.m.It had greened up a whole lot.I began call on my mouth then went to my Ole Yeller slate caller. At 9:00a.m.I got a bird to gobble up the holler above me.It sound like a half gobble of a jake.Around 9:20a.m. I heard some thing walking in from down in the holler. It was the grey phase turkey that I had saw last Saturday. The turkey was pretty.I decide if it had a beard I was going to take it if I could. The turkey was about 25 yards out.I could see a beard. It looked like it had a fairly good beard but it was had to tell with the black and white coloring of the bird.I decided to take the shot. When I shot the turkey was at about thirty yards it fell down. But the turkey got back to it’s feet and began fling straight to me.When it was straight in front of me 5 yards in the air I shot the turkey again. The turkey fell right beside me stone dead. When I looked at the turkey.I could tell I had just taken a grey phased bearded hen.The turkey looked bigger than it was.I guess the white and black coloring made the turkey look bigger. The beard looked longer too.Well I was happy with the turkey.I tied my turkey toter rope around her legs and toted her back to my truck at the top of the holler. When I got to the truck I measured her beard. It was was 3 ½” long.I took some pictures of my beautiful grey phased bearded hen.I drove home to show off my pretty turkey. My father-in-law took the picture you see here.I will post more pictures when I get them. Here is the whole stats of my turkey. She was grey phased beard hen.She weighted 10 lbs10oz.on my new Berkley digtial scales. Her beard 3 ½” long. And she also had a small bump of a spur on both legs. I know she was a hen.I can tell from her short legs, low weight, and the feathers on her head. But when I shot her I thought she was a gobbler. Her head had a red color to it and I saw her beard. One more thing was this was a jennie.Young of the year turkey. She looked bigger in the woods.Well I have her whole in the freezer.I am going to have her mounted flying.Good luck to those still hunting.
