I didn't know where to put this pic. This has got to be good as any This is a photo of the black bear hit on Hwy.29 near Cadott Golf Course last week. The photo was taken at Animals Taxidermy where they’re doing a full life size mount. It weighed 625 lbs. and was 7'- 4" long. The Warden said that bears loose 30 Percent of their body weight during the winter. If this were true…………this bear would have weighed 833 lbs. last fall and would have been the new State Record black bear

I just checked the WI DNR website and I have 5 preference points. I could probably draw a tag in zones A or C this year. I really want to hunt my own land tho....I'll need 8-9 points for that zone (B). So many bears but so few permits..........

mbpg- In Wisconsin you can't just buy a bear tag over the counter. The DNR decides the number of bears that can be harvested without hurting the population---that' s how many permits they give out in a given year. There are more hunters than permits so when you apply you might not get a tag. In that case they will give you a preference point. The state is divided up into different zones--each zone has a different quota so you accumulate preference points for the zone you want to hunt in. The bear in the pic came from Cadott--that is near Zone A--4-5 points. I hunt in Zone B--8-9 points.
They also give points for bobcat, otter, fisher and in some cases turkey.

Huntress, I thank you for cluing me in on the point system. It makes good sence and helps keep a healthy stock for all to enjoy. We have a draw for moose hunting in Nova Scotia every year in one zone, which is located in the Eastern part of the Province which is about a 9 hr drive from where I live.I have gotten drawn once in 5 years. But sure keeps a strong healthy herd. Thanks again for filling me in.Take care/Good Hunting !

mbpg- Did you get a bull/cow the year you drew the tag?
Do they let non-residents apply for moose in your province?? I love to hunt moose and I'm thinking about setting up another hunt in the next few years. I've never experienced anything like the heart pounding feeling of getting close to a bull with the bow. I really want to try it again.
