Many hunters asked me how different is hunting of Laika from hunting of Cur Dog. Here is my answer. 1. Laika belongs to so-called aboriginal primitive breeds. It means that the breed have never been subject to systematic selective breeding with registration. In Ural and Siberia, Laikas were the only dogs available for native peoples. Russians found these dogs with their native owners all the way across northern and northeastern frontiers of their growing empire. Laika is one of the most ancient hunting dogs and its ability of treeing small game and baying big game are natural; no training how to hunt is needed. Just take your dog in woods and turn him loose. These dogs treed and bayed animals since Ice Age, when people hunted with bow and arrow, spear and club. 2) Laika is silent during search and chase and barking only when animal is treed or bayed. The dog remains within relatively close range, within hearing distance from the hunter. 2) Laika is the most versatile hunting dog for all kinds of game, from squirrel to wild boar, moose or bear. Laika is using a unique technique for stopping and baying moose. No other dog breed can do it as well as Laika does. 3) In other then hunting capacities, Laika is not as good as Cur Dog. For example, Laika would not work cattle or pigs. Chasing farm animals is a taboo for Laika. If you encourage your Laika to go after cows, he would rather try to drive them in your direction assuming that you are hunting and would probably shoot them. Perhaps, Cur Dog would be better then Laika property guarding dog.
