P.S. shock collars make excellent training tools for children Yeah, we had a similar problem with the late night barking. Got a couple of 'em on the problem makers and ... problem solved. With a kennel full of 11 beagles at a time, when one starts howlin... they ALL start howlin!!

When I was training Lucy,,,she would try to get more than one duck at a time..The shock collar worked, then one morning we were real slow on the ducks and some guys acroos from us shot at some flybys and she hooked em overto get thier ducks... I didnt shock her I have used a few times and it seems to really do the job unless they are really stubborn. The bark collar thing that hits them when they bark may work,,but it didnt work when I had Hunter,, I would load him in the truck kennel and as soon as the truck started to move he started to bark and would bark and bark and bark,, I shocked him ,beat him,, I tried everything,,he just could not contain his excitement.. me and the guys finally bought ear lugs.

Never have used one, but have thought several times about getting one to put on my son's beagle. It seems like the poor thing would get horse from barking so much. But, I believe he is barking at rats that are in the back field and try and come up to get his food at night.

E Collars are a great training tool in the right hands. Often we are asked if we "Train" with shock collars in our kennel. The answer is absolutely not!
We do use them everyday though! All our training is hands on with every dog here. But there is no better way to reinforce what you have taught the dog in the yard when you go to the field. Still they are used with as little force as a CC or rope lead would be used in yard training.
When it comes down to which collar to use...well it's a personal preference deal.... I have had no luck with innotec at all....went through several sets before switching to Tri Tronics. I have yet to have a problem with it and it works well in all conditions.
Bark Collars....are another great tool! With 15 to 20 dogs here, you can bet we have several! try to buy the best collars you can afford, there is no reason to give a dog a jolt for no reason....like when a plane flies overhead or when he is getting in and out of his barrel!
Words to live by here.......Cheap stuff is not good and Good stuff is not Cheap!

One of the Best WHOA!! devices ever. Someday "WHOA!" will save that dog's life!
As reo says - it is a Training Reinforcement tool, not a Training device. Be very very careful with it as you can do more harm that good if you are not careful.
I use Tri-Tronics exclusively!

I won't turn a young dogor pup loose in the woods w/o a collar on. As stated before Tri tronic's the best although they do have some things the really need worked on. Like the plug in for charging the collars. And they DO NOT work when it's real cold out. I do have a Dogtra that seems to be working pretty good. But i've only had it since sept. and have not had real cold weather to test it. As far as bark collars Tri. tronic's the ONLY collar. The rest don't hold up and shock a dog drinking water or eating. I like the tone feature the best. I start with pups 8 weeks old in the yrd. Work with a cord and coming when called. Press the tone each time I call them. It really comes in handy at 1am in the woods when you can just hit the tone and have a dog standing at your foot in 5 min. and go home! Training pups when your right there and the 1st time they run that deer and you roll them over right away. It's priceless. It stops bad habits before they have a chance to develpoe.

As far as bark collars I have innoteck....the only thing have from that company that actually woks and works well. They have a sensativity setting so the dog does not get shocked when watering or eating etc.
I wouldn't reccomend training a pup or dog for that matter with a E collar. Spend the time and teach them on a rope or CC first. If you cant teach them on a short lead.....you cant get ti done on a long one!....And you damn sure shouldn't turn them loose!
Never give a command that cannot be reinforced!
An untrained dog in the field, is just that a dog, not a hunting companion. get your training done before hunting season, so you dont irratate everyone you hunt with later. You will invited back more often!
River,
What TT collar do you have? I have not had a problem in cold weather or charging mine yet.
I havent had the chance ot use a dogtra yet either.

I have the Trashbraker Ultra and the Field 70. I bought the Trashbraker brand new 3 dog system. From day 1 it didn't hold a charge in the cold. And the jack it plugs into just does not hold. They were supose to go back to the old jack methed on the new ones they released this yr. However, I heard the new e-collars just dosn't have the distance or the power of the old ones. The System I have is now 3 yrs old and pretty much worth less. You can't get the jack to stay in to charge. It will only shock up to about 50 yrds away. And god for bid it's cold out. It dosen't work at all. $800 for 3 yrs, i'm not real happy. They tried to get me to buy a new system when I called them. I was not impressed.
E-collars are the only way to train a Coonhound if you don't want them dead on the road. I do all the yard work and more. But would never turn a pup loose in the woods w/o one. There are too many things that happen in a woods that is NEVER going to happen in your yard. Most of the time your not even going to know where your dog is. It's a whole different world out there at night!

My frined uses them on his beagles when they dont mind. He has one that wont come when called and it takes quite a lick to get his attention. He usually comes after the shock.

They are a great tool. My lab barked at everything, used it one time. The first time we put it on her she had no idea what was going on. When she would act up I would hit the warning signal and say no. I did that a couple of times. She did it again I hit the control button(which would shock her) and said no. Needless to say she is a angle know. As soon as she hears me say no, she nows to calm down. I have not used it since. I'm going to start leaving her off her leash more in the woods while shed hunting so I might have to break the collar back out just in case she gets away from me.

I use them in a some what different way. Say a dog won't come to you, and the tone isen't doing anything for them. I shock them and they come running to me. I pet them up and consoul them. I don't want them to know i'm the one pulling the trigger. This way when there in the field and run a deer and I lay them out. They come running like did you see what that deer did to me. Not with there tail tucked because they know i'm mad at them.
