Or at least he thinks he is. This is my springer...Winterwinds Magic Treycer, AKA Bonehead, Stinkbut, and Furface. Stuborn as a mule, sometimes he's so smart it's scary, other times dumber than a post, but I luv him anyway!

Ya I know.....you're not the first one to call him a little "girlie boy", but when my friend's cute little britney comes over he thinks he's 'all that'.

That is a beautiful pup. Do you hunt him? How is he in the field?

He came from field champ stock and has a very good nose but I don't hunt him much. He was the runt of the litter, had a lot of health problems the first 3 years and never got any formal training. I originally got him for a tracking dog. I've always had springers and was looking for one to use to track deer.....in WI it is legal to track wounded deer with a dog. I've been told that bird dogs can become good trackers but I've had a hard time trying to keep his nose on the ground. He always wants to 'air scent' and then gets off track. Mostly his job is just to be my little buddy.

I had a guy help me track down a buck I'd put an arrow in... a little far back... with a dang doberman... talk about freaking out on how quickly that dog found blood spot after blood spot & how fired up it was getting when we got within sight of the buck on the ground... He had to pull him off & take him back to the house for fear he was gonna run up & start tearing the crap out of that buck... I had no idea that blood trailing could go so fast & he never even took him off the leash.

It's amazing how fast a dog can get on a bloodtrail and track down wounded game. The law in WI is that the dog must remain leashed at all times, you can't carry a weapon with you and you must let the warden know that you are tracking with a dog.
There is an organization in NY called Deer Search.....they track most of the time using wirehaired dachshunds. Maybe that's what my next dog will be........
