Last evening my Grandson Blake shot his first deer with a bow, it was a text book hunt and shot once again. We were hunting from the ground and going to attempt some rattling. The first set up nothing happened so we moved to the ground blind by the food plot. I wanted to watch the area for awhile before calling when two small deer came out at 125 yards. They were coming our way but Blake thought they would take a short cut where I had brush hogged toward the food plot. Blake was able to belly crawl 10 yards to a Cedar tree and set up for a shot. The deer came to within 15 yards of me then turned down the path. Blake could see them coming, drew his bow and when the first one came into the open he made the 5 yard shot, double lung pass through made short work of trailing. We had her dragged out to the pasture, field dressed and back in the woods hunting with an hour of daylight left. The last 10 minutes of daylight had a doe, a 4 point and a real good 8 pointer within 70 yards but couldn't close the gap. Blake said if he couldn't get the 8 pointer with his bow he wanted to try for him Nov 2 with his gun. So far Blake hasn't missed a deer in the last 4 shots so the 8 pointer better keep his head low.

Thanks Larry, I have a couple pics if I can get them on someway I will. I've been deer hunting for 46 years, 44 of them have been successful and I could not have pulled it off as good as Blake did. Heck I remember those first several years for me, I was nothing but a bundle of nerves and made a lot of mistakes. He is only 13 but I'm thinking it is time to make him do a little horn hunting and see how he likes passing some up. Something else I caught on to fast was how nice it is to have some one young hunting with me to drag deer and carry equipment. Seems like I'm at the age where I know a lot about deer hunting and unable to do most of it.

A proud grandpa for sure. I can only imagine how much fun that was Steve. I look forward to more stories like this. Blake has learned well. What an exciting start to fall for you guys.

Here is an after dark pic of Blake and his first Archery deer, took this with my camera. Have a good one taken in the woods on his iphone, don't know how to get it on here. Blake listens well when interested in the subject, never says much but this showed he had been paying attention to everything I had told him. And yes Terry guess you could say I was proud, more fun to leave my bow on the ground and see a 13 year old take one at 5 yards then it was to shoot myself. I also informed Blake that when one of those real big boys come out and we are together, it will be everyman for himself so he better be ready. That may really put my sportsmanship to the test.
