Today was one of those days where I caught up on things as work has been somewhat hectic.
This afternoon I loaded my lawnmower, took it to the East farm and mowed the yard at the old home place, where BTW, my Mom still lives there. She is always planting trees, marking them with flags, has turned the five acre yard into a forest over the last 40 years.
So it really wasn't much of a surprise when she called later and said a Deer had attacked her in her own yard. My Mom had planted some radishes and lettuce behind the garage and went out to pick/pull some of the crop. Her red beagle, Ruby, followed as always.
I guess Ruby started barking like she does when the cows come by the fence row behind the house. The dog got more frantic acting and was really barking and bawling so Mom goes to see what the problem was thinking some cows had got out of the pasture and were in the yard. About that time Ruby comes tearing around the garage with a doe deer chasing her. The dog goes to Mom for protection at this time and now the deer is on it's hind legs swinging at the both of them. So you would have to know my Mom to believe this, but she yells at the deer, throws something at it, and finally it jumped the fence into the pasture. A second later a little deer goes through the fence which is made from cattle panels, about 6 inch stay, so the fawn had to be new born, probably only hours old I would think and the doe had it stashed behind the garage.
Mom took the dog to the house then went back to check on the deer which had moved out into the pasture about a hundred yards.Later it left so I'm sure she either took the fawn or hid it again further from the yard. It was no surprise to me as where I stop mowing the grass is 6 feet tall, trees every where, flower beds, garden, all the things deer like so they have moved into the yard to stay evidently.
Last deer season we saw more deer from the front porch then when we went into the woods so this just confirms where I'm going to hunt this fall, only a few yards from the coffee pot.
