Back over 20 yrs ago I introduced a buddy to turkey hunting. Well we killed some doubles and good birds. We never had a falling out. Just lived farther apart. Well this year I moved closer and we have been talking and hooked up for the youth hunt and then went out two weeks ago. And had a very close encounter with an old long spurred bird he had been mess in with. Well anyway today we met up with another buddy I haven't seen in 15 yrs. And started hitting some old stomping grounds. Two spots were dead silent. Then we headed to a farm I haven't hunted in 5 yrs. The spring before my dad died was the last time. He and I killed some birds on the farm. We drove up to the edge of the field and there walks two hens down the field. We parked and walked up over a rise, where the hens couldn't see us. Then slipped into about 30 yds in the woods. I gave a few clucks. Nothing. I thought 10:22 second to last day. Let it rip!! Some hard cutts and series of assembly yelps. BOOM!!! He double gobbles 200 yds back behind us past the vehicle? He was across the main road. We drove past him! I hammered him hard with the calls. He liked it a lot. But so did a nearby hen. She was there in 30 seconds. Walked right on by as we stood there! After she was gone I turned to hit him again. He thundered back at around 100 yds. He was hung up ion a small ravine. So I had those two set up close to the field about 30 yds apart. I started moving away from him. Getting lighter and softer on the calls. That's all it took. The last gobble I hear was in my buddies face and Boom!!. Good 4 yr old bird. 10 1/4 beard, 21.7 lbs, slightly over 1 1/4 sharp hooks.

I don't understand the permit system. If you look at new jerseys estimated turkey population. Factor in how many hunters will actually be successful. Or a hunters success rate hunting wild turkeys. I just don't get it? Or I don't understand their benefits to conservation? My buddy mike who hunted with me this spring. Was born and raised in jersey. And he really couldn't explain it either? I mean you only get one lifetime to hunt. It seems like they are depriving a lot of their sportsmen from one of the most exciting critters to hunt. Especially residents who pay taxes. I'd understand if you only had 10,000 birds . Let me look up the estimated population again?

OK I stand corrected. I was looking at a different state entirely. The estimated population is 20 to 23,000 birds. OK let's look at this way. Lol! There is no reason why anyone should have to go more than two yrs without drawing a permit. I hope they have a preference point system?now I see why mikes friends hunt pa, Virginia, and other states for turkeys. Between now and next season I can direct you guys to some good game lands with minimal pressure if any. And most every year have plenty of birds. It would be almost worth it to spending 100 some bucks for a non resident license , just so you could turkey hunt. NY is rediculis for non resident licenses. Good hunting if you have the money though. I'd go insane without turkey hunting. Truly a shame and just not right. Let me know if you would like some info. Heck if its before the season even show ya bird hangouts. Not a big deal at all.

Great story and hunt Scott. Pretty neat to meet up with old friends and hunt the old spots again. Nice pics also. Here in Idaho, we can still by tags over the counter. When a tag is filled, one can just go buy another. I believe up to five tags.

That has to be awesome hunting in idaho for turkeys. The scenery alone would make the hunt. Many years ago I use to watch buckmasters. Jackie bushman use to go to Idaho every year for whitetails. I loved those shows. He hunted with Tim Craig I think it was? Then I've seen several elk hunting programs also. The terrain was what got my attention. Chasing merriams through that has got to be fun?
