I just returned home form a Cattle sale where they sold bred heifers and a few 4 and 5 year old cows. Many of them had been tested with an ultra sound so the sex of their calves are known, they were AI to expensive bulls but the cows were not even purebred nor were they Angus, top selling cattle in my area. The common selling price was $1900.00 to $2050.00 per head. The price has been on a steady incline for several years. I'm expecting purebred Angus to bring even more money especially next month. Now having been in the cattle business most of my life I've learned a few things. First of all, from the time a calf is born until it goes to slaughter not everyone involved will make a profit. For the calves born to these cows to think of making a profit, the fat cattle market has to stay at 1.25 Lb or exceed that. If this happens, hamburger will need to go to $4.00 or more per lb. There are many other variables that can weigh in at any time, fuel/transportation costs/labor/regulations/economy. Anything can happen and can happen over night just like the stock market. In this time of high beef prices a few hundred lbs of Venison/Elk or other wild game in the freezer are going to look pretty darn good as the snow piles up against the windows. It may be a great time to justify a new gun or bow too. I better get serious in the next few days with the old muzzle loader and quit taking so many pictures.
