April 15 ,16,17, were the dates set and heavily advertised for a Civil War re-enactment of the battle of Kirksville. There was a web page, stores in a 75 mile area sold tickets as well as on line. On the web page it even said that weather in North Mo was unpredictable so be prepared for anything, leading a person to believe it was going to be held for sure.
Well we took a van load of people and drove to a place called "The middleofnowhere " which can also be found on line, to find out it had been canceled late Sat. Of course a lot of folks did not get the short notice so made the drive to find out all too late. This was very aggravating but not nearly as bad as to what they did to the landowner, he was treated so unfairly words cannot describe the situation.
The owner of "middleofnowhere" is a retired Marine Colonel and has bought about 900 acres of North Mo land and developed it for the Outdoors man. There is a rifle.pistol, archery and sporting clay range. Also a camp ground, RV park and cabins for rent and a nice restaurant with a bar. He was approached by a group of people to hold the War re-enactment on his land as it was well suited for the activity and he was to provide refreshments, parking, restrooms for 5000 people.
The owner of the land did his part having rented extra tents in Kansas City, had hundreds of cases of pop, beer and water delivered to his business, extra tables for seating folks as they ate, many outdoor portable restrooms and so on.
At first I was very upset to have made the drive to find out it had been canceled but after hearing and seeing what happened to the owner of the facility we were all fuming for his sake. Sure the first two days were terrible weather, the last day was bright sunshine but It is my nature as it is with many folks, you never give up and you never cheat anyone .
The owner of Middleofnowhere, the retired Marine has not been out of the service long, a short time actually. He led 2000 of our troops at the border of Turkey for Desert Storm while most of us were home sleeping, he has been back many times under 3 different Presidents to fight a war and help rebuild the country of Iraq. I doubt very much that he got to say "time out, the weather is bad, I wanna go home" , he and so many like him KEEP their word so that we are free and get to live in a great country.
I find it unforgivable so far, to have treated someone so unfairly, especially some one of his character.
