Well, this weekend marks the closing of the early goose season here in NY and with that said, I've been patiently waiting to hunt our soybean fields once the geese started flocking to them. They've taken their sweet time to start feeding in our fields but it's mainly due to the fact that we haven't cut the beans yet. One week earlier of a cut would have made a world of a difference. But my scouting efforts had proven that there were at least a few flocks feeding there and with just two days left I figured I'd give it a shot.
Friday night's scouting showed over a few hundred geese circling the bean field. Most were sketchy as it was because of the surrounding hunting pressure and the current height of the bean stalks. Only a select few flocks actually landed. Most were just circling the area a few times only to fly to the next grass field over... a property that nobody can hunt. Nonetheless, I just wanted to give it a shot and see what would happen the next day.
So, yesterday morning, we were out putting decoys out well before daylight and were ready to go. A nice flock of about 40+ birds flew up off their roost on the adjacent creek to the property and it was game on. We honked at 'em pretty agressively and managed to get four to break from the group into our set. We blasted 3 out of the four. It was seemingly a good start to the morning. So far...
The rest of the morning proved to be difficult.
Several of the geese that were still on the water took their time coming up. Some flocks never even flew our way. We had one circle us and the shot was never called. It's my opinion that we could have busted at least another 3-5. But we got greedy trying to get the entire group to lock. So that didn't happen. Then, a small flock of 5 came in and we blasted two of 'em. That was late in the morning and all of us knew that would proabably be the last of the action for the morning. So we settled on 5 total and called it a day.
It was a good day because of the sights and sounds and a bit of shooting action... especially considering that I didn't feel all too confident that we'd even get one shooting op. But we didn't get skunked and I got some good eats from a crock pot dinner out of it so it was a good way to end the season and move into the upcoming bow season for whitetails! And boy am I ever ready for that!
Hope everyone that went out this year had a fun and successful goose season as well!
