I get a call from a guy in town saturday afternoon. He asks if we are still on for sunday. Say's his boy is ready to go. Yep its a go,I told him. i also told him the weather wouldn't be very good. So it maybe tough. But I had a blind four of us could sit in,and stay dry. The game plan was we would meet at a local store at 5 am. I awoke to rain,it was just spittin actually. My daughter and i waited from 5 til 5:35. No show! I sent the guy a text and then called his cell, nothin! I then said if they don't show in 5 more minutes we are goin to look for birds. We were already up anyway. Eventually i said heck with it . We were some 15 minutes on the road. And sure enough the guy calls. He apologized and asked if we could still go. Too me shootin one is better than looking at em. LOL! So we turned around and met up with them. The weather was basically miserable. But we headed up to where a field bordered state land. He had permission to hunt the private land. But thinking the birds were still on the roost or hadn't traveled too far. I figured we could slip in set up the blind and be ok. And the stateland was the best approach. Oh i failed to mention. When we got there. I was waiting for him to put on camo. He had none. Jeans a camo fleece camo cap?? No run and gunnin today I thought. Anyhow I couldn't hear anything with the rain hitting the roof and a slight breeze. So I just went with the same cadence or calling sequence I'd use on a slow moving bird. I called here and there for nearly an hour and a half. When I heard the unmistakeable cluck of a gobbler to the right. Randy looked over and said there is a big turkey 30 yds from the decoys. He has never hunted them so he didn't know the difference between a hen and gobbler. At first i couldn't see the bird. I asked what color the head was? He said dark red with white and blue. The bird clucked again and i knew for sure it was a gobbler. The jake came into view. But once he saw b-mobil,he didn't like that and walked to the field. Finally a nice stoppage of rain hit around 9:30. I could hear! I gave a long series of assemblies. Birds gobbled behind us and out in front of us. The ones in front were field birds. I worked a trio of longbeards into the field at 100 yds. But there were hens just over a rise. So they werent comin. I called here and there and all the birds just weren't moving. Around 10:30 ,the birds in the field were goin away. The gobbles were getiing faint. Then I did something i rarely do. It started to rain again, time was running out. I went into a raspy almost non stop calling of an old hen. When i say non stop I mean almost nonstop , brain pain calling. The gobbles grew louder and louder. The field birds were on their way. 5 hens, leading the way. 5 gobblers in tow. Both jakes and longbeards were struttin and chasing eachother. And hammerin bigtime! All at once they stopped at 75 yds ,perked up and ran like hell. 2 adults and one youth hunter were trying to stalk the birds and busted them out of there. Game over! We were a bit ticked. It wasn't the time to tear into someone. Kids present and all. i did say that is a good practice to show a young hunter! Real safe!! But in all, our weekend was pretty awesome. My daughter is ready for the longbeards she says.
