Belle had her first introduction to a memory retrieve in thick brush yesterday. I have bumpers that are have bird wings taped to them. I figured I would try a little exercise withe Belle. I took the bumper with her in tow and tossed the bumper into think cover. I then turned her around and went the other direction a few yards or so. I then turned her back towards the bumpers location and gave her a hand signal and the command to release her. She went right after that bumper and picked it right up. She did this three or four times and returned to hand without dropping the bumper once. When I tried this exercise I just had a gut feeling it was time. Though I never expected the results that I got from her.
Today we are going to try doubles and see how she does with this. Though the doubles are going to be very basic.
Any way I will let you know how she did.
Your friend, Brian

I have been astounded at how well belle has been doing. I know she is going to make an excellent duck dog.

Belle is going to make a fine hunting dog!! Great Job! Its hard to put into words but that gut feeling is Belle letting you know she is ready for the next level and you listening!! Many trainers just dont take the hints or move to the next level of training before their dog tells them its time. Pike

Many trainers just don't take the hints or move to the next level of training before their dog tells them its time. Pike What I am somewhat worried about is, when she gets ready to go to a level that I can not take her to. I am constantly educating myself so that I may be able to prevent this. Her abilities are advancing , sometimes quicker than I can learn. I have found through research/watching of other training methods or steps to train, that if I trust my instinct and natural ability, I can take her to where she needs to go. But, I still worry about it. I do not want to do Belle a dis-service.

I really strive to let Belle tell me when its time to move on. I watch her confidence level as a indication. I do not want to push harder than she is ready. I am very cautious as to not burn her out.

If you hit a snag in Belle's training, just ask other trainers for advice, (one's that had and over came a similar issue) But I think those snags will be few and far between. But I do understand not wanting to do your dog a dis -service!! Numerous times while training and watching Mojo work I get this guilty feeling that I should be training him to be a waterfowl dog because I can see it in him. Pike
