hunting in heels and me went into the mountians near jackson wy to hunt deer with a rifle sept. 15 , but the archery season for elk in wy. is fron sept. 1 through sept. 30. The year before while we were hunting deer with a rifle, we seen lots of elk. so heels took her bow in with us on the rifle hunt this year. after she got her big buck this year,we went after a deer for me. We went up high into the cliffs looking for a big buck, but we only found elk. There was a herd of about 100, with 12 huge bulls in it. we went after elk because we were hearing them bugle all over. hunting in heels was the only one with a bow so she had first try for the elk. she hunted all that day, and has quite a story to tell about that hunt. The next day she let me use her bow and she stayed in camp. I spent all morning sneeking in on the elk. It was easy because they were bugling every few minutes so i could teel exactly where they were. I managed to work into the middle of the herd up a very steep hill because the wind was blowing down hill and the bulls were fighting with each other . I got up to about 50 yards when i busted out a spike and some cows. But the big bulls kept on fighting. So i moved into a possition where i could see the trail the cows were leaving the area on and waited. It only took a minute before the bull followed her down the trail. As he came twards me all i could see was ahuge set of horns. I didn' t wait to see if he was the biggest one, i knew he was big enough to not pass up. I drew back and held as he finished approching me. At 15 yards he turned broadside and stopped, just like in a dream. I shot him right behind the front shoulder, with heel's little bow. I will never forget the feeling i had at that moment. It was elation beyond compare. It was a double lung shoot, and the bull dropped in 30 yards. Here is a pic . Sorry i didn't have even a camera with me because i went up there mainly to look for heel's elk,and just got lucky. He scores 354 2/8 and has 6 on one side and 8 on the other . The draw is in january for wyoming elk.
