This year I plan to incorporate a different approach to deer hunting. I'm gonna shake things up a bit and go outside of what I normally do. Instead of getting out there in the same location at the same times I'm planning on doing just the opposite.
Since I'm "portable" with my climber, I plan to take advantage of just that.... moving around. I will not hunt in the same place 2 times in a row. I've only been out twice now but have moved my stand location each time. Well, actually I used my stand opening day of bow and then on Sunday I hunted from the ground. That in itself is also a change up pitch I plan to throw as well. I won't be just hunting from a treestand this year either. I will be on the ground in a ground blind at times, hunt from the climber stand, and also do some still hunting mixed in with a bit of drives if I find the deer are holding up routinely. One of the other strategies I'm looking to incorporate is hunting at different times of the day. This year I plan to do a lot of midday hunting. That's right, you heard me correctly... midday hunting! I don't expect this strategy to be one that will be the key ingredient to my sucess this year, but do believe with the right timing it can pay big dividends.
We try to pattern deer and all the while they are actually patterning us! They are very adaptable creatures and do so very quickly. I feel that in order to obtain a clear advantage over these animals I have to keep 'em guessin!

i hear of an awful lot of deer killed at 1 or 2 in hte afternoon, staying out on stand when it is slow can be tough, esp. when the boys have shot that morning and you know fresh venison T-Loin is hitting the grill! I take out a Yahtzee game or a book, also the poker game Pocket Dueces helps to kill time! Staying out midday can be absolutley fantastic. And the deer always seem to be as surprised to see you as you are to see them!

When the rut is in full swing i'll do a number of dark to dark sits and the middle of the day can be fantastic, i've seen some real bruiser, missed on at 2pm one year, by being out in the middle of the day and alos mobile i was able to get close to this deer. I was sitting in a tree and watched two bucks visit a spot just in view, that was all it took, i climbed down and moved to the area, there was a scrape that was red hot, my being prtable made it easy to move and i wasn't opposed to trying.
I've been a big fan of rarely hunting the same tree twice, i might hunt the same general area a coule of days in a row, but typically i move fifty or more yards, except one spot i found up north. It was just an awesome site, had three amjor trails intersecting, i sat in that one tree whenver the wind was right meaning it blew consitant, not swirling, i always had one trail that would be blown, but it didn't matter.
any way, moving around alot can be frusrtating as well, one day the deer will pass where you were set up the day before, but i think the rewards are better than the consequences.

I try to hunt different stands too, I kinda roatate them and also have my climbing stand if I see something or notice a change.. Wind and temp all play a big part in where I hunt. Also so again does the moon. Tim
