As I was sitting in my tree tonight waiting for bowinkle to come meandoring on through I started thinking about all the ones that by some stroke of luck got away.
The one that gets me to this day was my very first rifle season when I was 15. My dad, brother, and I went to camp and my brother got his first buck opening morning. Well on the 2nd day of rifle season we went out in the morning and didn't see anything. We all met back up at camp and ate lunch and my brother said he was going to go sit in a blind we had in the swamp for awhile. Dad and I were going to head out as well when my dad said lets just sit here and see what comes in. There were always doe's on the bait pile in front of camp. Well dad and I started playing poker and we played for well over an hour. My dad said he was going to lay his head down on the table and take a quick cat nap and if anything came in to let wake him up.
Well his head no sooner hit the table when down the ridge just west of camp came down a big bruiser. He was a nice 10 point at least. All I saw was antlers and I said "DAD!, DAD!" and he looked out the window and he saw it and he said get by the door!. He grabbed his gun and handed it to me. He said now son just relax and take your time. He opened the door and none of the deer even noticed. I raised the gun and all of a sudden all the deer started to get really nervous. They all scattered and I had to take my eye away from the scope to see what way the buck went. He went up to the top of the ridge and stopped. So I got him right in the crosshairs and "click" nothing happened. I froze. The buck just trotted off into the woods.
What happened was my brother was coming in from the swamp because his feet got cold and that is why all the deer got so nervous. The gun didn't go off because my brother never unracked the empty shell from the deer he shot the day before. I guess it was the bucks lucky day. It's still good for a laugh all these years later and we still razz each other about it. But it sure would have been nice to have him hanging on the wall.
I'm sure some of you guys have similar stories you could share.
