I had been hunting for awhile and didn't see a thing. Decided to do some scouting deeper into the area instead of hunting. After some time, I took a break, sat under a tree and had 2 come whizzing by!!! I yelled like crazy as I was getting behind the tree. Another come by, so I laid at the base of the tree and fired back toward the direction the sound was coming from and it stopped!!

yes, some long years back, huntin Califorina wild pigs on the edge of Fort Hunter Liggett. We where muzzleloader huntin them with traditional cap and ball front loaders, we stumbed onto some fresh pig sign about 15 minutes old (no ground litter in the fresh rootin) followed it up to the top of the hill where a fire break road was , and the other side of the hill was some ruff , thick oak brush called " charmece" other wise known as stench brush. Private land was on the other side of the fire break road, a friend and I put our black powder rifles between our legs (while standin) and started to glass the brush line hopin to call the pigs back to the Miltary base side, where we heard the scream like whizzin sound, then the sound of a gun shot afterwards. It took me a second (felt longer) to figure out what was that, we about said it at the same time and started runnin down the hill, (Note: my truck was 3 miles away) and we ran for that truck usin every bit of available cover we could find, then another screamin whizzin sound and another gun shot came. My buddy decide then and there he was goin to stand his ground as we slid behind an old dead fall, (Note: we where huntin with traditional Muzzleloaders) me with a Kentucky Long rifle in 50 cal. with 95 gr 2 f Black powder and a patched round ball, Dave (my buddy) Tennessee Mountain rifle in a 45 cal. both cap locks, Dave decides to hold his ground by firing off a shot where he thinks the shot came from, My pissed comment was "Thanks! Dave you just gave away our location!" with all the smoke in the air. I creeped around the dead fall with my 10x35 bino's and there he was with a another person aiming down at us, about 700 yards, I wont ever forget this part "He was dressed in all denim , shirt and jeans , his body with an assault rifle wearin jeans and tank top. I notice there was a dry creek bed below us (about 60 yards) and them 2 assholes where still on the ridge line circlin around us, cause we where in a good size box type canyon, we slipped down in to the creek bed and took it to the main dirt road where it dumped out to a low water bridge, (Note , this is a pretty heavy wooded area) until we hit the main dirt road at the low water bridge, open field where my truck was about 1/2 mile from us on the side of a praved road, (note, this area was only a walkin area only) we made the mad dash for the truck and never looked back prayin the whole time . We stopped at the MP office on the base explainin what had happen and they said there was a shootin 2 days before in the same location, that they where goin to investagate it, coup[le weeks went by and on the news there was a big Meth Lab busted in Lockwood behind Fort Hunter Liggett off of Interlake Rd. Whats where Dave and I was huntin at. Dave is still in California and we talk about that and we both will never forget it , it was 18 years ago, boy how time flys

i only hunt public land in archery season for that reason

Yep. While bow hunting thick cover in a power line I started hearing gun shots off in the distance. I realized gun season was coming up in a couple of weeks and maybe some guy was zeroing his gun in.

About that time a 30:06 bullet comes whizzing by my head, zzzrrm. Then another, another. The ground on the other side of my tree stand was getting hit, that was the back stop.

So I climb down, walk wide to the spot I heard the shots coming from and lo and behold there is my best friends son shooting his 30:06 getting ready for gun season. Gods grace is sufficient...

Yes Iraq bullets couny more because they were probably being fired at you intentionally. Glad to see you got home in one piece. A tip of the cap to you sir. Your service is greatly appreciated by one and all! i have a neighbor who hunted before he went to Iraq and now has no desire to go anymore. Says he has seen enough bloodletting to suit him. i ahve heard similar stories about men who have served in heavy combat. Seems a shame to lose the desire to do soemthing that is the very fabric of what you are fighting for to begin with.

Sittin in a tree stand last year on some conservation land (no Firearms) when these kids opened up in the parking lot with shotguns, peppered my tree about 4 times, did some yelling to no avail, so I climbed out of the tree and stood behind it while I called the Sheriff's office on my cell phone.

After the shooting stopped I headed for the truck and I was one pissed off individual. These kids looked at me like I was some kind of ghost, walked to their car and could smell POT, just about the time I was to blow up, 3 sheriff's deputy's and a Conservation Agent showed up.
Them boys had more problems than they knew what to do with. Drugs and Guns, needless to say, they got a free ride.

Yes , Thats what convinced me that deer drives wasn't for me . 1 st and last time . The next year one of the guys shot his hunting partner while field dressing his deer. Lucky he wasn't killed.The victim didn't have any orange on and was wearing brown carharts in thick brush .

Although I've also had some strays come over the top of ridges from hunters firing at game silhouetting the skyline.

The first year i started deer hunting by myself, i was sitting in small ravine, under a fairly large hemlock (30+/- in dia) tree, now mind ya, im sitting there looking like a large pumkin, when a large doe apears from no-where, when she spoted me she took off across the brook and up a short bank( 15 ft or so) into some shrubby trees. then i hear boom- whizzing then splat, right above my head! i look up and about 10 ft up the tree is a nice little hole. I wasnt very impressed, at all. esp. at 14 yrs old. this guy comes out of the bushes and when he saw me asked me which direction he went in? my first couple of wrds werent very nice, but... then i told him his 'he' was big ole doe. when i pointed out where he shot all he could say was oops. not a good way for a youth to start his hunting career.
