by you when you were hunting? In my 36 years of hunting I had two come whizzing by me so far! Last year the first day of rifle season I was in my treestand and I heard some rustling behind me. I kept watching when a black bear came out of the laurel and walked by me and stopped. It looked at me and took off running out the side of the mountain. It wasn't ten minutes later, I heard someone shoot and a bullet went whizzing by me pretty damn close! I yelled like hell but no one answered. That scared the crap out of me!
The other time was about 4 years ago. I was standing at the bottom of a ridge and on the next ridge over there were some people driving it for deer. I thought I would stand there in case some deer would run my way when a shot rang out. Next thing I know I hear this whizzing sound going by me. I stepped behind a tree and stayed put until the drive was over.

Needless to say the guys over at the tactical range could hear me cussing fo a mile or more... But in the past I have heard that sound before, its a sound that burns itself into your memorey

We were rabbit hunting down some railroad tracks. Another group was coming our way about a half mile away. Some turd shot down the tracks at us with a .22 Sounds like a bullet, that is the only way for me to descibe it. I have heard High powered sounds as well, close enough to hear is close enough for me!

I have also had two 'close encounters'. First one while bow hunting on private property....tresspasers shooting at song birds with a .22, bullet ricocheted off a rock right next to me. Second one was a 30-06 that zinged by my head while I was standing in my own driveway. Tuff is right...once you hear that sound you will never forget it!

Bullets whizzing?
Yep, many times. I had one come just over my head in my front yard once.
I've had several pass over my head one day in PA. It turned out to be some guy sighting in his 270, and the bullets were bouncing off a chunk of limestone and travelling up and away about a half mile.
The only really scary one was a day in Clermont County, OH. It was opening day of shotgun season, and I saw a line of does come by just out of range and head into a thicket. The next thing I heard was a fusillade of shotguns as each of the four neighbors emptied everything they had at the deer and then reloaded and tried again. The problem was they were missing and coming darn close to me in a treestand about 200 yards away. Luckily I had the trunk between me and them. One round hit a dead limb about 10 feet from my head and the limb came crashing down. The rest went whizzing by on either side of the tree. All told, there 12 rounds set off in my general direction.
As soon as the deer left the field, I called out and told them I was in their line of fire and I needed a ceasefire for a few minutes while I got out of the area. I did not hear anything back from them, but I packed up and hauled out of there.

Only once did a shot come near me and it was rabbit doggers!!! I hollered out that I was there and they told me to "GIT" So I did what any 15 year old with a .410 bolt would do... I shot back 3 rounds of 6 shot, reloaded with #4's and let go 3 more!!! Then after a minute for their hearing to return I hollered out that I was there first, but they were loading up dogs hollering about getting me so i reloaded and confronted them!!! They were cussing like all hell at me and 2 were still holding their guns! I took mine obviously off safety and told them that an apology would have gotten more respect than the "GIT" so if they wanted to play G.I.JOE I WAS READY!!! Never took kindly to disrespect! I know it was wrong now, but don't know if I would treat it differently today as I am NEVER on public land and any of us with permission should respect each other as well as the landowner by behaving like fair and decent men! on more then one occasion I have heard this sound. The time that I always remember. Is the first it was my first year elk hunting. I was sitting on hill side with my dad and got down the way about 50 yards was a couple of his friends and there was a bull bugling up the hill from us probably 300 yards. It was oct 9th or 10th, for a couple of weeks after the rut you can still call in satellite bulls and such. Well we were mewing in hopes of bringing the bull down well across the draw some one started opening fire and they were shooting at a bark stripped fallen tree about 15 yards away from us. My dad told me to get behind a stump and I did. He began yelling and waving his arms. The idiots on the other side must have thought that the elk where moving because the shots were getting closer to us. My dad keep yelling and then our friends asked if we got anything over the radio and my dad told them that there where idiots shooting at us. They said they saw a truck down at the gate and it had CA plates and that they saw two guys go up the other side. My dad yelled at them again that he would shot there truck. they keep shooting and my dad told his friend to put a round in there tail gate. they did and that another sound you don't easily forget. They stopped shooting and my dad and our group went down the hill to the gate. They had words and the CA guys said it was there first time hunting elk and heard they were hard to kill and kept shooting. They left and nothing else happened I think that rather then tell law enforcement that they were shooting at a log about 300 yards away they just took a bullet in the tailgate.

Back when I was in Vietnam,in the baby seals,, I was only two, so I could walk better then most baby seals, I know most of you guys dont know about this branch of the military..its an extremely covert operation,, Hmm I may get in trouble posting about this,,Well anyway my team was pushing through a rice flat and a giant group of nese crept in on us.. Luckily I could swim since i was born in a swimming pool. I was experienced and my instinct took over. I busted out of my babytoon and swam to the other side of the rice patty. Shoo I got away with bullets flying overhead I crawled right into a concentration camp. I ended up saving a group of soldiers I was small enough no one realized I was there. Medal of Gerber is what I won.. Directly from the President.. No light of that war guys.. I was just trying to get a laugh and build alot of Karma. My real dad died in Vietnam,, but anyway,, I took a few new guys dove hunting 2 years ago,, I had a brand new pair of Oakleys,, I think I paid 175 for these glasses,, to much but they are great glasses,, Oh back to what happened,, we were walking a tree line I was on one side and a new guy was on the other, I got a little ahead and heard a dove cooo before flight I looked back and got shot in the face with 71/2 from about 100 feet, It scratched my glasses and burnt my face pretty bad,, It wasnt a bullet like a 22 but still hurt like Hell. Needless to say he doesnt hunt with me anymore and he bought me new glasses.. Tim

When I was about 12 & going squirrel hunting after school, either by myself or with a couple of different buddies... me & one of them were out in the woods, standing under a couple of big beach trees, facing each other, 22 rifles in hand, pointing down towards the ground when all of the sudden his gun goes off & I feel something thump my boot... I look down & see that the bullet had gone through the very front end of my new boot... it was at that moment that I thanked the good lord that my mom was always buying me shoes/boots that were 2 sizes to big... Obviously my buddy was quite panicked & realized immediately that his safety was off... & then he told me that he has always sqeezed on his trigger as a nervous habit when his safety is on... you can imagine what I had to say... I can not repeat it in this reply...

Ever since the Wisconsin DNR declared war on Whitetails in the name of CWD it is down right scary to enter the wood here. Bullets are wizzing all over the place. Last two years in a row I have had several close calls. And get this, now they opened rifles in a area where rifles were closed years ago for safty reasons due to the population of people and started giveing you all the free tags you want good for any deer you see... REAL SAFE HEY!!! I hope they are held responsable for the guys who get shot this year! We have way to many hunters in this state to allow this kind of hunt. Last year they gave all the free doe tags you wanted in the CWD zone and you could "Earn a buck" that was unsafe enough!!!! A guy who had earned his buck tag and was now leagle to shoot any deer shot some guys pet llama and said he saw a brown animail and did not wait to see its head cause he could shoot any deer. Now this year anybody can shoot any deer with unlimeted free tags..

Does Iraq count? If not my buddy was shooting at a buck that slipped in between us last year while we were doing a push. I tell you a shotgun slug makes a hell of a noise after passing through a deer.
