We had been hunting at one of our favorite turkey hunting spots during fall turkey season. This day we were way back in. I came upon a plateau that was covered in wild grape vines{not common here the kind as thick as a baseball bat at the base and climb all the way to the top of the canopy} beech, and oak trees. There was a rocky ridge above. As I worked my way through I saw a flash of antlers and a white tail...and he was gone. I didn't get a good look at him, but I knew he was a good one. It had never occured to me to ask the farmer if he minded us deer hunting here. On the way out we stopped and asked the farmer if he minded us deer hunting, he said come ahead. The second day of deer season we came back. I made my way to a comfortable spot high on the ridge over looking the plateau. I thought...what are the chances of him still being around here on the second day? Do I want to fill my doe tag way back in here? Around mid morning I was sitting cross legged on the ground against a boulder havin a sip of coffee when a doe steps into the picture. She's actin a little skitzy and lookin back. I put down the coffee and slowly picked up my savage. She mulled around below me for quite awile{long enough for my legs to go to sleep}. When she finally moved behind cover and I was about to uncross my legs, I caught motion in the direction she had come from. There he stood...not 75 yds. away. My legs are killin me. I could just see his head in the thick tangle of vegetation. His intrest was on the doe 25 yds. to my right. After what seemed like hours he finally stepped out of the thick stuff and presented a shot. I put the cross hairs right on him an squeezed it off. He gave that double rear leg high kick that means only one thing... a heart hit. When I got down to him he hadn't run 5 yds. I dressed him out and pondered the drag out. When I dragged him to the logging road {still a mile to the truck} I heard a four wheeler approching. It was the farmers nephew. He voluntered to haul my buck out for me. Can it get any better.
