Make sure the lathe has a sturdy bed (Base)...There are some "Cheap" ones out there with just a pipe as the base they will vibrate while turning...Make sure you can get accessories for it, so look at the thread size on the head...Make sure it is a standard thread like 3/4"X16 or so on so it will accept a Nova chuck or similar chuck for turning pot calls...Also the most important thing is the taper on the head and tail stocks where the spur drive and live center fit in are of a (Morse Taper) MT#1 or 2...You can not find certain accessories for an MT#0...Hut carries game call spindles for turning duck, grunt, goose calls but they do not carry one for an MT#0 for instance...Here's a link to a pretty nice lathe that I'm thinking of buying myself: www.grizzly.com/products/item.cfm?itemnumber=G9247With all this said I made pot calls for the past 12 years and never owned a lathe...I used a drill press and jigs that I designed and made myself for shaping the pots and keeping them consistant in thickness...

I use a lathe to make a living and would have to say a jet lathe is the best for the money delta also makes a good lathe. I started out with a cheap lathe and had to replace it in less than a year and the next one less than a year. A jet or delta mini lathe will run in the 300.00 range less than I payed for the two cheapos and it runs every day. Also its easy to find Acc. for. GOOD LUCK newmoon

A Jet Lathe with #2 MT . Also a Nova Chuck is a good thing for turning pot's. Spend your coke money on a "GOOD" set of turning tool's, you'll be glad you did!

The best two (based on all the recommendations that I've heard) are the Jet mini and the Delta midi lathe. I've had a bunch of call makers recommend both. I've got the Delta....love it love it love it.
The key is make sure you go ahead and put out the money to buy decent tools. $50 for 10 tools is gonna make you sorry.
