Took the ATV over to the East farm to check cattle, there was a big doe in front of the house as I was leaving, saw two more doe by the white gate, as I was coming back home it was the time of day when head lights should be turned on and I didn't have much faith in seeing anymore deer. Then I saw something cross the road into Shawn's hayfield, when I turned the corner I was running beside one of the big boys, his antlers still growing, no curve to the beams yet, 8 points and about 18 wide with plenty of room for more. Well that made my day, cause if he's the one I've been hoping to see this summer he should be a B&C for sure this year.Although he wasn't on my place, he will be some time, only 40 acres between me and him now. I'm going to make an appointment with him sometime the first part of Nov, can hardly wait.

This evening the large doe came out in front of my house, she still is alone but I can tell she has fawns, 3 doe West of driveway at far end of field, 1 nice buck, he had six points and will grow more looks like, his hair color was very dark, the doe all had the red summer hair color. Late this evening went outside and a deer was walking through the front yard, couldn't tell what it was but probably the one that has been eating my yard trees. Raccoons are back and tearing into feed sacks, climbing all over the ATV, upsetting the flower pots, they can sure cause a lot of trouble.

Rained 3.5 inches in the last two days so went to check on my cattle tonight on the East farm, saw 16 deer on the way back. Only one was a buck, a small 4 pointer still in velvet,Six were fawns with spots, one old doe had triplets with her in the yard at old farm house. After chores were done went to bean plot, double ladder stand at old cabin and clover field to overseed more ladino clover, brassicas. Put on some turnips in one place. Back home later I seeded some clover in with the milo food plot then added some turnips/brassicas/clover in a bare spot in my bean field. Just sprayed the bean crop with roundup last week so weeds are wilting and should not need any further spraying. Soybean food plot was doing good but the deer have just about ate them all before they could set on any beans, hope the interseeding will fill the voids, try to help them out for the winter ahead and they eat everything as soon as it comes up. Need to be getting game cams up soon, just keep putting it off.

Saw several deer come out in the fields this evening, they were all doe with spotted fawns. The beans seem to be a favorite now and they are eating a LOT of them. No bucks have shown in the bean field for over a week.

Spent most of today getting ready for opening day of bowseason, got all sight pins mounted on the new bow, sighted in with field points, still need to shoot broadheads. Put together another dozen arrows, bought my tag and picked up landowner tags as well.Have 6 deer tags for bow, 4 turkey tags, I have 4 more firearm deer tags that I can use with bow too, but will likely use Black powder rifle. One more day of work, then 2009 hunting season will get underway with archery opening Sept 15. Have the day off and planning to hunt turkey and scout for deer most of the day.

Shot broadheads this evening, flying good on one set of arrows, not so good on the 4 inch vanes. Plan to hunt turkey and small game tomorrow morning, try to get in some shooting with the new bow in the woods. If the deer are working the acorns may hunt in the evening in one of the white oak stands. This evening had to go see Jerry at 9pm to settle seed bean bill, deer were blowing all around the house as I walked to the truck, turned around in the drive and saw a set of eyes, a fat possum, then another set of red eyes on down the drive next to the bean field. I thought it would be a coon or possum but it was a Badger, I followed him for awhile into the clover field with the truck and he kept turning around as if to stand his ground and was not in a hurry. I left him be after a few minutes, first badger I've seen out running around here in over 10 years. Tommorow is opening day of bow season,my favorite time of year and hunting is about to begin.

Went to East farm, getting there just at daybreak. Walked to the North end of old hog lot and saw a turkey so I tried to sneak into some cover to see if there were more. About 10 minutes later had a turkey fly from a tree above me, saw one more on the ground, 3 deer, all doe.Hunted for 2 1/2 hours but there was not much moving so starting checking on my cattle. Fall calving cows had one new calf so went home after ATV, came back to move cows around. On the way saw another turkey and 3 large doe deer. This evening checked cows, one more new calf, so spent some time with him as he was in the wrong field, then went hunting. Saw 3 large gobblers in the clover field at old disc, 2 doe deer, on th eway out at dusk saw another doe. ( 9 doe deer & 6 turkey for the day) not much game for opening day, but still had fun and was able to check out some stands, fence and food plots, found some more work that needs done.

Went to East farm this evening, saw 2 small deer looked like they had just lost their spots. Put out some mineral in front of clover ladder stand and game cam. Game cam had 12 pics on since yesterday, only one buck so far, a 9 point, a decent two year old,he came in late in the night and walked right up to the camera for 3 pics. Probably will set another camera up this weekend on the West end and try to get some buck pictures, so far only doe are coming to the clover at the salt lick and old disc. Beans have been eaten so they are not going to be any good for later, the deer just would not leave the plants alone & have them eaten down to 2 or 3 inches tall. Brassicas came up and now need rain.

Took the oldest Grandson bowhunting this evening, chose the double ladder stand next to the clover field so I could sit with him with plenty of room. On the 4 mile drive to the East farm we saw 6 young turkey and a groundhog. After parking the truck at the gate we walked the fence line to the old disc & about 80 yards North there was a very large gobbler, all alone, so we hid and watched. He made his way across the field out of sight onto Errol's place. We picked up our gear and made it another 50 yards when a flock of turkey showed up out of some tall grass and they had us pinned down. Managed to scare them easily enough so once again headed toward the stand.Another turkey was in front of the stand but he too went over to Errol's place. Climbed into the stand for a 2 hour hunt which only 1 raccoon and 3 squirrels showed up for.Checked the game cam at this location and had a few doe pics and one good buck, looks to have many stickers maybe making him a 12 or 13 pointer. On the way out saw 1 doe feeding by the truck so we started the drive back home.
As we made the turn at the Y, I checked the North side against the skyline as I've seen many deer there before.I noticed a set of antlers coming over the hilltop toward the road so I pulled over, grabbed the binocs and waited. He kept walking our way until his body was in full sight then stopped to watch us at 100 yards away.I knew he was good but when I got the glasses on him I was very pleased or suprised to see he had 10 points, past his ears 2 inches on each side, long tines & beams but he also has good mass, just a good 140 inch or better buck. I was able to pass the binocs to my Grandson and he was able to watch him for at least two minutes before I took them away for a last look myself. It gave me a good chance to explain to Dylan how to size up a buck and what to look for with no one under any pressure. I will probably spend a few hours this fall hunting this buck unless it picks up better at the East end, usually does first week of Nov. The buck I got on camera has a heavy body, an older deer but have no idea what he might score, can just tell he has stickers all over a main frame 8 point rack, spread is not great, maybe 14 inches.
My cowboy friend saw the monster 14 pointer this weekend across from my house but I know this old buck will stay in the Willows on the creek as long as he can, not coming onto my place until long afte dark if he even comes acroos the road at all. I'm hoping he will check out my does in a month or so and possibly move into my overgrown field behind the beans where they stay. I have only got to see this deer three times, and he knows how to stay safe. Seems to never be caught out once rifle season opens so I'll give him some time with the bow, may surprise him.

Late getting home from work so when I went to the East farm to check on the cows it was dusk. When I turned the corner at the White gate here came a herd of deer, there was 8 maybe more but I quit counting when I saw 3 were bucks but they were not very large, just small 8 pointers. Saw another one in the yard and another at Ron's place on the way home. Total of 10 head of deer. We got some rain today, possibly an inch or more so should help with fertiler/lime I put on a week ago. New seeding was needing rain bad too.

Went hunting after work,it was 5:40 when I parked at the gate and started toward the clover field. A doe was already in the field and I couldn't make it tio the stand. After 10 minutes she made me and let the world know by blowing through the timber. Saw another doe come out at the North pond, 400 yards East of me and go towards Erroll's. After watching the field awhile, decided to trim some limbs on Cedar trees growing in fence row. They have grown in so much that deer are going around the ends of the clover field, cut 4 holes in the cover, will see if deer start using these places to cross in a week or so. As I went back to the truck I saw 4 deer by the wild Pear tree on Ron's place, it was a large doe and 3 fawns. Saw a total of 6 deer tonight, no antlers. Moon will be right for hunting evenings by thurs and friday after work, with rain in the forcast friday may see more deer if a front moves in. Bucks are laying low for me now and I'm not going into the thick stuff yet, just trying to scout the edges, so far not much going on, food and water everywhere so there is no need for them to move. Came home to work on archery gear and broke my blade on cut off tool so will have to wait on making up more arrows.

It rained this morning, stopping about 9:30am,loaded my ATV onto trailer and hauled to the East farm. Spent the afternoon cutting Cedar limbs out of fence row and building 3 ground blinds with the limbs. Hopefully make the deer start crossing where I want them to instead of going around the ends or into the West pasture.Over time the cedars have closed n until there were no openings in the fence line, the fence being 52 inches tall netting wire has just about stopped all the deer from traveling east and west. Maybe these holes I made today will change their routes getting them to come by the stands closer and more often. Put out two salt blocks at home and seeded a few more brassicas.Took ATV and rode the west side of place, saw several trails going into bean field from my overgrown hay. Stopped at the North gate for awhile watching for deer and about 45 minutes before dark 7 came from Brenda's timber across the Bluestem headed for my bean field. At 10 pm drove to East farm to check on a cow and never saw a deer either way, almost always see some but the last few trips have been dry runs.
