Been the slowest year bow hunting that I can recall for years. Some guys are seeing a big one now and then, a few have been taken but the chases are far between with most movement at night or noon time to 2 PM. I keep getting does and small bucks close, often within 4 to 8 yards, they then end up seeing me and let the whole world know it. Can't see a good buck where I can hunt and/or close enough. Three more days until rifle season and then the good bowhunting will be over for awhile, maybe for the year. Dewayne's deer ended up with a green score of 153 5/8. I had guessed it to be 150 to 152 when he got it out of the woods, wish I was that good while they are on the hoof. seem to always miss them exactly 10 inches when they are walking but once they are tagged usually get very close.

Finished the first part of our archery season this evening with a 4 hour sit in one of my ladder stands, have not drawn the string back on anything this year, Never did see a real big buck in person, about all my buddies have, even taken a couple bruisers out of the woods but I wasn't even close. Tomorrow morning Penny and I will be carrying two .270's, weather forecast is warm, up to 70 for a high, rain, rain, rain, and winds at 18mph at daybreak increasing to 25mph and gusts to 35mph, it just keeps getting better and better. With this forecast I can see a still hunt into one of the thickets for me cause I will not give up, there has to be a way to see one of those big boys in my sights.

This weekend was one of the worst I've seen for years for weather but we hunted hard and had a good time. Sat was windy at daybreak, wind got up to 35 mph, rain started much later than they forecast but when it did it came down by the buckets full. Several big deer were taken in my area but none by my group, we again did not see the big ones. Sunday, early saw 2 doe, later saw 4 doe, rain off and on and windy, a constant 30 mph and gust to 40, hot, 69 degrees. Later in the day my wife, Grandson and I headed to the East farm. They were going to use the pop up blind while I went in at the gate to sit close to the road. Clear blue skies, windy, and hot at 3:15 when I left the truck. By 3:45 it was thundering in the NW, winds had changed from that direction and became stronger. The wind hit 40 MPH, lightning was close and when I was thinking of heading out, I glassed one more time down the draw I was watching, saw a 10 pt get up and head my way. He was big, tall, with a white rack, just what I wanted. Had the crosshairs on him and pressure on the trigger but he was getting closer. Bad mistake to hold off as he went behind a big White Oak, lightning struck close, it began raining hard and the hail was even worse. Soon the ground was white, temps dropped and all glass was impossible to see through. I couldn't find the buck again but about 2 minutes later heard a shot from Blake. WE think it is the same deer and he must have missed. We looked and found no sign of a hit but I will check more on Monday. The storm had us cold and soaking wet so we quit for the day with more deer coming out as we walked to the truck. Has to be better days ahead I would think.

Yesterday I helped John find his 10 pointer he had hit the night before. Found it just as the pouring rain began and got soaked. The sleet that fell early was no problem but the rain made for bad tracking and miserable conditions. Deer movement was still slow, only seeing a few doe all day for myself. Today was the first I have taken off in nearly 3 weeks but will be back after them sometime tomorrow if I can get some work caught up.

October 4th, 2014, hunting with Grandson Blake, had a big 11 point come out at 70 yards. Few minutes later he had made a 3/4 circle around me getting to within 30 yards. If only I had climbed into Old Faithful, the double ladder stand instead of staying on the ground for turkey I would have had an 8 yard shot. Didn't spook him at least and he walked off into the Cedars to be hunted another day. Estimating him at 140 inches, 6 long points on his right side, 5 on the left, big rub on his back. Hope we meet again this fall, he did make me do some more fine tuning on my bow, sights and arrows should we meet up.
