Yes 4pointer, the rut is on here, just beginning, they are chasing some. Big boys everywhere. Wish I could shave 25 years off so I could see, hear and climb trees better but have to deal with where we are in life and these deer have a big advantage over me these days. Getting ready to leave the house now, very wet outside so they will be quiet moving this morning, would sure like to get one, need some rest

This mornings hunt was short but a good one. Within 5 minutes of climbing into the stand saw a buck going behind me. Hit the grunt call and he came in like he was on a string,an 8 point, too small but he gave me every shot opportunity you can imagine. Another 5 minutes same thing happened with a spike, gave me all angles. After sometime with no deer I made a move to the West, same 8 pt came in again, could have drilled him. A doe went west ahead of him then it was over. Left the woods to work for the rancher a few hours.
This evening decided to stay at home and yard hunt, turned fancy the house dog out and began to walk behind the house. Saw 3 does right away, they soon began looking North and that is when I saw a forkhorn coming our way. Looked to the South and in front of the house 3 does came out, turned back North and here comes a monster 8 point out of my ditch toward the does. I had made it behind a haybale at the North end of my haystack trying to keep my dog calm as the deer approached. The big buck came up to the doe, smelled her, she ran right past me at 20 yards and I just knew I was set to have a shot at a super buck but he turned at 75 yards and went straight East. I went to the East fence and tried calling but no good came of that. Went back to the house and had 2 deer in the front yard, 3 across the road and 3 West of the driveway, all were does. Plan to hunt from the yard in the morning, may not see anything but won't be burning any gas at least.

This mornings hunt at home was a bust, only saw a turkey gobbler. Ended up in the North stand ,nothing, Went to the East farm for a short time, saw a doe at the bridge and an 8 point with a doe at the White gate. could have got a shot at him but still holding off for something larger. This evening went to the East farm, saw 3 doe, 2 of them were in the corral, one was across the road. The bucks are tearing up one of the Blue Spruce in the backyard, so far they have broke 8 limbs off of it, they have also started a scrape in the old garden.
Tomorrow plan to go to the East farm again and start the last day of bow season before firearms begins Saturday. Will hunt early, go to work and back to hunt unless I get a shot at a decent buck. Just hate that gun season opens so early this year, the rut is slow at kicking in and need a few more days of bow hunting, oh well , have to live with the rules.
Will be able to get some pics soon I'm sure of some harvested deer, when the guns come out the game changes dramatically. Weather is going to be interesting, in the 70's , than rain, then falling temps, should get what we like in there somewhere sounds like and all in 3 days.

I'm trying Larry, really wanted a big one but wasn't in the cards the early part of bow, it ended this evening with me watching a big boy across a pasture, he never moved until dark and I left. This morning I had a doe right under my stand, a 7 point trailed her to shooting range but I didn't shoot him. A big one came by in the, went to my truck and crossed the road, he got with a doe he had been trailing be my guess and 2 hours later I found him in a tree top at 200 yards out with no way of getting closer. I watched him for 45 minutes with binocs , he would move but no sign of coming out of the drainage ditch he was in. Left him there and went to work for 4 hours.
This evening I went back to the Oak tree and there was a truck parked in the middle of the road, they were watching the deer I wanted to hunt for. I told them they needed to move on so I could make my plan. Drove to the White gate than walked back on the North side of the fence to the Oak tree and set up for him to make a run across the pasture, hopefully to the North where I was. I finally found him in the binocs, and watched him until pitch dark, he never left the area more than 10 yards. He was a good 200 yds out, wide open, nothing I could do.
Making plans now for tomorrows gun opener, have 5 guys to get placed, so text messages are flying back and forth right now. Maybe one of those big boys will make a mistake in the AM and one of my guys will get one. I've seen 4 very big deer this week, a few others that are not bad, hoping the fellas will let them walk but it is up to them, if they want to shoot they should do so.
Tomorrows temps are going to near 80, some wind, may not be great,Sunday calling for a lot of rain, Monday Temps are going to drop like a rock, that will be the day I stay after them from daylight to dark. Sat and Sun will do a lot of visiting and helping others get on a deer but then I'm getting serious, getting the .270 ready in a few minutes.

Sat Nov10th, Penny and I went to the East farm, very windy and warm, saw a 4 point and several doe. Temps ended up getting into the high 70's. Paul saw a monster on Tim's farm, it got away from Paul,Tim and Danny, but all three got a good look at him. I saw one real good buck in my bean field mid morning but was too far. Keith and Jim both saw the big buck that lives on the Ranch but they also were too far.
Sunday, saw one doe early, the lightning became close and rain started so I quit hunting by 9AM. By early after noon the temps were diving so I went to the blind for 2 hours saw nothing but more rain. Evening I hunted from the attic in my garage, saw one 8 point buck at 700 yards and one doe about 500 yards. Temps were cold and wind still blowing hard.
Monday, Temp was 23 and windy, windchill 16 degrees and I about froze. Hunted until 10 AM, did not see a deer. In the afternoon went to the East farm, picked up some firewood than went to the barn to hunt from there. The first hour saw nothing than some movement caught my eye behind the pond, turned out to be deer and a lot of them. They came out single file from the Cedars and there were 14 doe and 1 buck,a 7point. Looked to the West and saw 2 doe come out of the Cedars by the big pond and go South. So now that I have relocated the doe, going to hunt the Cedars and hope to get in on a chase, one of those big ones may show if I stay with the does.

Hunted from the barn this AM, saw one doe, moved to the cabin for awhile and saw nothing, no deer along the road on the way over , evidently mornings are not good right now.
This evening hunted at the barn again, saw 6 doe and two decent 8 pointers. One of the bucks was moving fast, searching for doe, he went West into the Cedars. The 2nd buck stayed on the North side of the ridge most of the time , saw him three times in 20 minutes, total of 8 deer this evening.

Ryan shot a 9 point this evening behind the house and 20 minutes later I shot an 8 point about 30 yards from the house by the hay stack.

Way behind on my journal so posting these pics of 2012 season. Top photo is of the two bucks taken behind my house a few minutes apart. The one on my right is the one I took, on the left my son Ryan took with his .264 from the double ladder stand. Mine was 10 yards behind the garage and shot at the great distance of 19 yards running flat out. Second pic is of my Grandson Blake with the 2 doe he took on last day of youth season, Jan 2013. He fired two shots, one was behind the ear at about 60 yards, the last one a couple hours later he shot between the eyes at 147 yards.

This weekend Blake came out and stayed all night so we could prepare for fall deer season. He is excited to go bowhunting and after watching him shoot I could see why. We adjusted the draw length by 2 inches, cranked up the lbs by about 5 or 6 and he was shooting great. We rested from shooting for awhile by going after the disc at East farm, brought it home and worked up a plot behind my house near his stand. Plan to plant radishes there, Then found another stand site for him where we plan to put up a hang on, located about 75 yards West of the house and 10 yards from 60 acres of standing corn. It may be the best location on the farm this year, looking real good right now.
Later in the afternoon Blake shot his bow more, doing much better than I could. He was knocking vanes off at 20 yards and at 30 yards, group was baseball sized. Set up a 3D deer target and he put 12 arrows center of kill zone at 20 and 25 yards, made him quit for two reasons. The first, I didn't want him to get too tired, start shooting bad and lose an arrow, second reason is he is, making me look terrible. I was hurting bad from shooting the night before and can barely hit the side of a barn. He loves to torment me about being old. Leave for Alaska in 2 weeks, returning on 9-15, opening day of bow season. Blake says he will be hunting in one of the stands when I get back home, he just may have one on the ground by the time I get back.

Those are two very nice bucks Steve. I would be tickled to take either one. And how awesome for your grandson to be following in your footsteps. And the Alaska countdown continues.
