Temps have dropped ,wind is blowing hard with snow in the air tonight.Friends of mine that hunted today saw a lot of activity this AM and nothing from noon until dark.I'll hunt tomorrow morning at home ,plan to travel South to the MO river in afternoon and be back home to hunt my farms for the next 10 days. Had a large 8 pt run a doe through my yard this morning but I had to work today so couldn"t take advantage of the rut getting underway. My friends are passing up 130 to 140 bucks about everyday but I'm going to shoot the first good buck that I have a great shot at.

Went to Saline county Saturday afternoon without any luck.About 4:30 I received a call from my bro , he said he had shot a good buck back home and was getting ready to drag him out of the woods. He thought he would go 140 with 18 inch inside spread & 13 points. Well turns out a green score of 151 6/8 with a 21 inch inside spread. The buck is not real heavy, maybe 180-190 field dressed so his rack looks huge.If I'm going to out shoot my bro this year, I've sure got my work cutout for me. I had been asking for cooler weather, well I got it, down in the 20's and windy, froze out of my stand twice today. Will put on the heavy clothes now cause the deer are moving, and with 5 days until rifle season I need to spend all my time hunting, not leaning on the stove.

Went over to the deer processing barn tonight to see my brother's buck for the first time. He is thinking about mounting it so dropped him in the freezer. I've seen several bucks this size and larger but I haven't been able to get the distance down to my liking yet. With 4 days left until rifle season I'm going to have to hunt hard. Today's hunt only produced a five pt, a spike and a six pt, all illegal deer.

The 8 pointer I've been hunting bit the dust Sat, my cousin took him with a rifle opening weekend. He had a sticker on one brow tine I had not seen before but it doesn't hurt him much, just a good scoring 8 pt for my area. He was about 4oo yards from my favorite stand when he was shot,I had closed the gap to 50 yards before but couldn't close the deal with my bow. Still have some big ones around, so I'll keep on trying.

Rifle season closed today so it's back to hunting with the muzzle loader shortly and my bow every chance I get. I believe many of the big bucks I was hunting made it through but they are going to be hard to hunt now. I'm looking forward to hunting them on a level playing field once again now that 99 percent of the hunters will be out of the woods.Once the real cold weather sets in bow hunters will be scarce and I'm looking forward to having the woods to myself.

Doug came by last night and gave me a doe he had shot while feeding the cows, seems as though the neighbors are feeling sorry for me so they are bringing me food.He also said he had helped Tracy drag out a 10 pointer, a 6x4, that had 4 broken tines,so had been a 14 point. It measures 21 1/2 inches wide and weighed somewhere around 250 lbs. He took the buck across the road from my house up on the bluff from the red barn. I hadn't been seeing many deer there so have spent little time hunting my place. Tonight when I came home from work there were 30 deer standing at my mailbox. We were unable to cut some soybeans in the wet areas so now that it's cold and some snow cover the deer are coming in to clean up behind the combine.Since they don't make it onto my land until near dark they will be hard for me to hunt. With Shawn and Mike's permission I need to cross the fence, backtrack them a hundred yards so I can catch them staging up for my beans before dark with legal shooting time.

Muzzle loader season ended Sun,Dec7th without any luck. After rifle season it had become hard to find deer period, esp. big bucks but in the last 3 days we were on them once again, just a little too late.Cold and very windy conditions made for some tough hunting, some snow on the ground that had crusted over making any movement to and from the woods very noisey. Doe season will open this coming weekend for rifles but I will probably be bowhunting so I can shoot at bucks if the chance occurs.

Doe firearm season has been open for almost a full week and I had planned to take a couple for the freezer if given an opportunity. Each day this week as I have returned home from work I've see deer coming out into the North end of my bean field and each evening they show up earlier than the evening before. Each day the weather has continued to get worse, more wind, cold and snow.
The snow tells the story from the night before as I leave for work and notice how close the tracks are getting to my front door, down to 40 yards sometime during Wed night. The uncut beans we left in front of the house are almost completly gone in just a few days after the easy grazing was covered by snow and the deep chill arrived, they are losing their fear of me as the need for food increases.
This Thursady evening I arrived home an hour before dark with many things to catch up such as splitting some firewood in preparation for the coming ice storm, feeding the cows and checking the water tanks. I worked fast taking advantage of the daylight, splitting some large peices of wood and storing them on the front porch in the log rack. Taking a break I noticed 2 deer coming out in the field but the distance was long and I still had plenty of work left to do so I didn't go for my gun. Soon I needed another break from the heavy maul I was swinging and the number of deer had risen to 11 all headed for my beans close to the house, but watching me carefully. They seemed unconcerned while I was swinging the maul and throwing firewood so I continued working.
With a few minutes of good light left the 11 deer were 60 yards from my porch and 15 more were on their way from South of the road feeding past my mailbox. It started freeing rain ,the wind switched to the East, I went in the house with an armload of wood for the stove and watched them from the front window until complete darkness. I've hunted them hard this year and they know it, but this evening we were all just trying to survive the winter.

Was able to sneak in a hunt this evening so I decided to hunt the East farm.First I checked my camera, nothing but doe deer and a racoon. Since I had not been to the clover field for over two weeks I began walking in that direction. Soon after arriving at the old disc I saw a deer in the distance.Looking through my binocs I could tell it was a doe, then another deer came out of the dry pond followed by yet another. I began planning the stalk thinking they would come toward me also as the evening drew near and I could narrow the 300 yards down to 30 or less. The three deer had my full attention, a mistake on my part, as I began to sneak under some cedar trees for concealment and get the stalk underway. Movement to my left turned out to be 5 doe already on their way to the clover by way of my exact location. At 10 yards, no arrow out of my quiver, all I could do was get busted big time. They all ran to the dry pond and teamed up with the first 3 doe.I decided to just stay put and watch. With 30 minutes of light left I was surprised to see another 8 deer come out to feed in the old pasture for a total of 16 deer.Since it was too late for a stalk I went to my truck to come back home with some light left.As I drove by Shawn's there were 15 deer in his field standing beside the deer blind. Tonight's total sightings, 31 deer, all antlerless.

Many bucks have already dropped their head gear. May have a couple mixed in with the doe. Look closely when they approach, especially when you hunt from the ground.
Good Luck

The end of the 2008 deer season came today as Jan 15th was the close of archery season. I wanted to hunt to the bitter end and that's exactly what it would have been if I didn't have to work this last day.The temp this A.M. was -12 with some wind, bitter cold. The cold weather has kept me from hunting much because of the extra time it takes to get chores done and weekends are used to thaw water lines, haul feed and firewood in preparation for the next week of winter. While working on my farm at daybreak and dusk I have been able to see a lot of deer, mainly doe and the numbers are large, more deer made it through the season then ever before it seems. The bucks have gathered together once again & moved from my land to the Christmas tree farm and the lake.Don't know why they do this but seems like each year is the same. My game camera shows only one small buck passing by, an 8 pt and I have no pics of bucks that have shed so will wait on shed hunting.Maybe if left undisturbed for awhile longer the shed hunting will be good on the pipeline and Christmas tree farm as there seems to be a large number of bucks in those areas.

Met with Gary from the MDC this morning to discuss plans for thinning a timber stand on my bros place. Already have a 9 acre TSI started on the home place for this spring so free days are going to be used cutting trees. While walking the timber I found an 8 point buck carcass, could not tell cause of death. Had 35 turkey spend the entire day in my backyard, all young birds but I enjoyed watching them as our population has been way down the last two years. Thousands of snow geese flew over today going NorthWest so they may know spring is not far away.At one time geese were reaching from one skyline to the opposite skyline, it was a beautiful sight to see esp.since I don't have wheat planted this year, and they passed me by.

Stepped out on the front porch this morning and heard my first turkey gobble for 2009. I grabbed my binocs to get a good look at him, looked like he had a 10 inch beard and was decent sized, welcome site to see. There were 30 other turkey with him, all hens or jakes. There were Robbins, Bluebirds and Redwing blackbirds making a racket in my bean field as well, signs of spring are on the way.

Finished my 9 acre TSI project this past Friday and got 3 acres of burning done to help native grass get started in old pasture. Hard to believe where I'm now cutting trees in the background of this pic, my father grew corn on this same land in 1952. Friday was a nice day, warming to the 50 degree mark and calm wind. Sat,April 4th was our opening day for youth turkey hunting. The wind was blowing early and got worse as the day went on, ending in gale force by dark. Sat night , hard rain, light rain/mist at daybreak on Sun morning, wind, falling temps with hard wind driven snow by early afternoon. It was not good for the youth in North Mo and everyone I checked with had no luck although I know of some that hunted hard. With no foliage at all, wind, rain, and cold the odds were sure on the side of the turkey. Maybe by spring season on April 20, the weather will get better.
