Well, it's here!! Today is the opener of the New York turkey season! The happiest day of the year! I've got my eye on a double bearded bad boy along with several other nice birds! This year is going to be a good one! This morning found me waking up well before the alarm went off and a surge of adrenaline already pumping through my veins. The time has come, when playtime is over and we start playing for keeps! I'm on my way!

Well, the bow season has officially kicked off and found me in the woods with hopes of sticking a fatty doe for the freezer yesterday. Stand placement was in a great spot, but didn't produce an actual harvest. Although, I did have 3 doe out at 45 yards that I possibly could have taken but opted not to due to not having a clear shot... I just wasn't comfortable with the shot and passed at full draw. Upon further review after exiting my morning set, I decided to follow the trail they came in on. I found the motherload run! It wound up being only 70 or so yards from my original stand location from last year. I will be there this morning! Well, on my way out the door here in a few seconds in hopes of nailing a nanny! It's a tad warm and slight rain with a wind out of the north west. A bit of fog and slight rain should "dampen" the morning... but I'm hoping it doesn't dampen any shot opportunities... we shall see.

The past two hunts have been a complete WASHOUT! Literally. Raining and just nasty out. Not even worth suiting up for. But, the diehard in me has me out there tryin to stick one with the bow! I'll be waiting for this weather to clear... I've got a feeling there will be a spike in activity once it does.

Wow! It's been a while since I've updated this journal. Just reading the last few entries I see that SO MUCH has been left out! . My post at 3:04 a.m. on opening day of the N.Y. Spring Turkey Season ... well... I ended up getting that double bearded Tom! Probably the first shot to ring out in NY state at that! Got 'em good and early right at fly down! What a great hunt and a beautiful bird. There's nothing like finding "the one" you wanna go after on opening morning and actually getting him! Doesn't happen often... at least for me and what a stellar season that was! Not to mention my biggest bird to date not only 2 days later... Tank Lonspur! He's currently residing at the taxidermist's right now and I can't wait to be reacquainted with him yet once again!
Last spring I was in on about a dozen kills and saw so many great memories and the smiles that come with. Surely a season to remember! I won several turkey contests in '08 include our very own Battle Of The Birds. A banner year for sure and one that I'll never forget... most importantly, I got to share it with family and great friends. You just can't beat that!
I also arrowed some deer this year. Just does, and got some meat in the freezer. Encountered one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen in the wild... face to face mano y mano... 20 yards eye to eye... I missed the opportunity, but I will never forget the moment! Another great year in the woods both spring and fall! No complaints here and I thank the good Lord above for granting me such great blessings!
Now.....
This spring... it's almost here... well, technically it is here! Two days into the official kickoff of spring. The Toms are out and gobbling pretty good on the limb right now. No real signs of any kind of breeding interest just yet. Mainly bachelor groups and displays of dominance. No real fanning... at least later in the day that is. Mainly the establishment of the pecking order.... going real HARDCORE right now. I'm actually seeing more Toms right now than hens! They're coming out and it's good to see them once again!
I'm there in the shadows... watching, waiting... and ready.

Well, a lot has happened and I've got many things to add here to this journal. Just not tonight. But I did want to add the 1,000TH POST to this board while it was there for the taking! I see one more on this site that has my name all over it too! Gonna go get that one as well!

The birds are still in their bachelor groups. Been watching my flock for the past few weeks now and have been having some VERY close encounters with them! Was able to have them only 20 feet out in front of me and got a chance to pull up the binos to take a look at their ankle bracelets. Some REAL NICE dagger spurs on a few of 'em and ALL were showing signs of being at least 3 year olds.
There's about 15-17 Toms in the one group right now. We'll see how long they stay in the area before spreading out into their spring flocks. It's looking good thoush seeing as if most of my property is sporting great habitat and the best food source within miles for them!
