So far had a great start to 2005! Got my longbeard and went toe-to-toe with a BIG boy on the last day of the season. Actually nice to know he was still alive... for next season.

Spoke with Midge today... said the farm isn't lookin so good right now. Cows been dying for no apparent reason. Somethin with their liver?
Runoff is bad with the corn fields right now. Alfalfa growing nicely though. Report from the farm is 50/50 right now.

Took a trip out to Charmins place today. LOTS of standing corn. Had a few cobs while I visited and mmmm! Nothin beats fresh corn. He said he seen a few hens with a TON of little poults with them. Said they looked a little small, possibly a late hatch. He also saw a decent 6 point buck out back of his place that he swears didn't have any velvet at all. That's a good sign for this upcoming fall!
On the way back, stopped by Midge's. Wasn't there. Left note that I stopped by. Their corn looks great too! They planted it across from the farm as well this year!! Hell yeah! Almost 90% of their plots are corn now!
Just down the road I saw two hens with four poults with them. Small little guys. About 12" long if that. Damn I wish I had my camera with me!

Got my eye on the new Hornady shotgun slugs. Look real good from the ballistics standpoint and hear mixed reviews about them so far. I might be going with the Nikon scope for the 835 this year all depending on the money situation. Bushnell trophy scope is the second avenue I might take if the Nikon doesn't pan out. About a $60 difference.
Still haven't gotten out to the farm yet with all the stuff goin on here and tending to the site I just haven't been able to break away. Gas is at about 2.71/gal right now which also makes it hard to take the road trip. Was supposed to go out to the lodge last weekend but never did. Charmin might be pissed about that but what can ya do??
Might be hittin up the lake next weekend or the weekend after that to get one last fishing opportunity in before I shift gears completely into "hunting mode". We had the surprise engagement party for us a couple of weekends ago up north that got in the way of any fishing plans I had so hopefully I can make up for it and get one more shot at it before the seasons change.

Went out scouting on the 21st. Very hot and humid. Jumped a deer (didn't get to see it through the bush to determine what it was) on the south side of the ridge property on my way into the woods. Fields have been cut at least once. No corn on the south side. Found a couple older treestands on the peak of the ridge by the orchard field. Nice big run only about 100 yds south of it going down the ridge: The bottom v's and makes for a great funnel. Lots of tracks down in the drainage. Run looks as if it goes through to the second section of woods down by the yote field. Almost comes right to the 4-way. Yesterday I took a trip to Midge's place and most of the corn has been cut. They have been spreading manure over it up on the hill. Saw about 7 jakes on the hill. We had a severe wind storm yesterday with about 40 mile an hour winds and rain. All the geese and turks came out right after it settled. The land looks to be a lot different than it was last year. Midge said that they have planted an extra 40 acres of corn this year. They also have recently put up a new smaller silo. She said that they have a group of deer (about 5 of 'em) that hang right around it everyday. Went to Charmin's place yesterday too. Worked on his site for him. He got a sweet new gun at an auction. Browning limited edition lever action 7 mag! Sweet gun! Corn is still standing. It's all browned over. They're about ready to cut anytime now. He's been seeing lots of geese and turkey. A few deer too. We took a ride up his property through the fields in his truck and when we got to the top of the hill there were two decent does feeding in the field. They took off only a few seconds after we arrived. Just found out that Charmin should be getting about 5-7 nuisance permits for his property so I'm definitely psyched about that! Can you say "load the freezer up!!"

Out my way the rain has come in the last 2 days. Which is good considering it's been pretty scarce lately. In the summer time you really like the nice sunny weather around here considering we only have two seasons.... Winter and Winter lol. We've had a great summer if you like warm humid rainless days. Again, it's what you like but turns around and bites ya in the ass come fall while hunting. Temps have been cooling down at a slow rate. The trees are now just starting to change. Those bright yellows, orange and red are starting to get me excited for hunting again! DEC is reporting fewer numbers of deer this year due to 2 harsh winters in a row (which is what they ALWAYS say every year!!) and therefore are granting less DMP's this year. While scouting the other day I've found lots of runs going into clover and corn fields. Lots of acorns it seems this year and from what I've seen are quite soft. Food sources seem to be plentiful this year. Haven't been hearing of a lot of harvests here in NY yet (bow is open in the Northern Zone right now). Ours (Southern Zone) doesn't open for another 7 days. The anticipation is growing within me and hopefully will prove to be a good year!

Man, I'm friggin tired. Got about 5 hours of sleep last night. It's 4:18 right now on opening day of bow season 2005. Current Weather: Cloudy with a few showers. High 61F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of rain 30%. Checked the [glow=red,2,300]moon phase[/glow] calendar on here: 88% Full tonight. -Wind is in my favor today. Still damp and cooler. Hunting the upper clover field behind the farm today. Deer have been frequenting that field every day. Seen the same buck in that field two days in a row. Planning on hanging my climber in the woods about 20 yds in off of where two logging roads join together and a major run comes off into the field. All available shots should be less than 30 yds. Gears packed and ready to go. Coffee goin down like it's goin out of style. In a few minutes I'm off to take a scent free shower. I'll be out the door by 5:30.

Well this morning was a bust. Although I did see deer, just not by my stand. As I pulled into Charmin's driveway at around 6 am I saw two does bedded in his front yd. They must be the ones making the tracks in his driveway by the barn. One was a good sized doe. Saw two other deer down below in the alfalfa field. Running actually from the woods into the field. This morning was a soaking wet cold one. Just one of those days you just feel miserable being out in the nastiness. I was pumped this morning though as I headed out. Cranked the tunes on the way there but the emotion slowly faded as I sat there getting drenched. Could barely hear anything with the constant rain falling from the soaked leaves. At one point (for like 30 mins) I had a bunch of little blackbirds (approx a few hundred of 'em) all perched in the tree tops above me. Man those sob's were loud!! Couldn't hear anything with all that racket. It was like they KNEW where my stand was and were letting the woods know "Hunter over here. Hunter over here." The geese out there are unreal. I've never seen that many geese on one farm. Had to be in the thousands. Constantly flying overhead and were just as loud as anything this morning as well. No deer came out today. Sat for 6 hours in one location and NADA! When a four wheeler went by about 400 yds away on the adjacent property it was my cue to call it a day. Not disappointed though. This is new property and will be a learning and building year on this particular plot. Been there four times now and seen deer all four times I've been there. Good percentages. I'll probably stay home for the rest of the day. Too waterlogged right now to go back out. The weather did clear up some and the sun did eventually break through by noon, but not in time for this morning's hunt. Tomorrow I may not hunt from a stand. I might just hunt down in the alfalfa field and stalk the ones coming out of the woods into the field. All depending on my mood. Views from my stand location this morning:

Gob , I had to work this morn God must know we need the extra cash, I believe alot of people wont see alot till about 10 am, hours will vary for the time difference, I am not even going out tonight, gonna spend some family time since I have been strapped to a tree the last week. The time here that I have been seeing them is about 7:30 pm which is unshootable by law, I talked with Kevin who saw a huge deerthe othernight driving out feeding the catfish in the pond he said it was wide heavy and white tips on his tines. Anyway back to the time thing. Deer feed every 4 hours they may go only a few feet or they may venture. But I swear on this moon thing, outdoor life has a time table with the best times and excellant times.. I believe it really works, also I never have seen deer on a full moon unless I stay out all day. Sorry the weather scks but I would love to have the rain. Tim

Man, tonight was windy as all heck. Gusts were up to 35-40 mph!! Wasn't sure if I was even gonna go out tonight. Giants were playin and I was tired but, huntin will always win out over all! So, I figured the deer just wouldn't be movin with the wind so high but figured I'd get out because I'd never know the truth to that if I was at home wonderin about it. I made my way out to Charmin's farm and contemplated the whole time on what I wanted to do. Since I debated back and forth as to whether or not I was gonna go I wasted time and figured I wouldn't have much time to hang the portable and settle in before the action got started... if it did at all that is. So I opted to hunt from the ground in the alfalfa field I had seen the two deer in a few days before. It was in the evening when I seen them and opted to go off from what the past has proven. So I set up in the corner I saw them in and waited. The wind was so horrible and I was beginning to doubt any sighting of deer. At this point I was in "scout mode". Since it's new territory for me this year I'm using this year's bow season as an opportunity to learn the deer patterns for the upcoming firearms season. Well... at 5:20 I spotted a doe coming out from the brush... how I didn't see her as she came out is beyond me but there she was. My heart skipped a beat and I started getting in "the zone". Another doe came out with her and the proceeded to graze in the tall grass heading toward the alfalfa field. They were out about 250 yds and no shot opportunities were available. I watche for about 10 minutes and decided to see if I could get them to come closer by letting out a few fawn bleats. They raised their heads a few times in my direction (had to hit it pretty hard to get the volume over the wind) and continued to feed. About the third sequence of calling to them the one big doe spooked and went back where they came from. The other followed suit and disappeared into the brush. It was starting to get dark and I decided that it was a good time to head out since I forgot my flashlight in my vehicle. As I left I found two kill sites right near the edge of the field of two turkey. Looked to be adult feathers but hard to tell in the light and since I was on my way out didn't spend too much time analyzing. I've got them pegged where they're coming out into the field. The run they came out on has a nice rub on a sapling running parrallel to the run itself. I noticed it on the way in and thought to myself I might wanna set up here... hindsight is 20/20! No trees around to hang a stand so ambush from the ground will be the only remedy. I'll be ready to stick a doe there next time out. Just want some venison right now... freezer is officially empty. Got to whack one and either of these two doe will make a good harvest. The one bigger doe should make for a good entry in the contest too! She's probably goin 170 right now give or take. Some pics of tonight's hunt: The view to my right: The view to my left: Two doe: Me goofin on cam:
