You probably shouldn't use one made for lead only but I think all brands have at least one made for hevishot type ammo. the one I had in my mossy had ''lead only'' stamped on it so I got another one that will except both loads. I think it has to do with the level of constriction sense lead is soft ,it can be choked tighter. Where as the hevishot type ammo is harder, you cant constrict it as much without the risk of damaging your choke or possibly your barrel. Anyway Yank, that's just my 2 cents.

Can I use my current Remington shotgun/choke with new Hevi-Shot Turkey Loads?Yes. Remington has extensively tested Hevi-Shot through various Rem-Chokes. The top-selling choke, diameter and resulting Hevi-Shot pattern percentages are as follows:Ventilator (.655") 87% 30" circle, 40 yards Full - Lead Only (.691") 88% "Full - Lead or Steel (.691") 88% "Turkey Extra Full (.687") 92% "Turkey Super Full (.665") 93% "NEW Hevi-Shot (.675") 94% "Tighter chokes than .665" do not improve pattern percentages to any extent and in fact begin to produce more open patterns.Hevi-Shot can produce cosmetic rub marks in barrels and chokes, simply a change in surface finish. Over an equal number of rounds, this rubbing is similar to that experienced with steel shot. Both materials create more choke strain than lead shot due to a more solid payload. With the Remington wad column, the Hevi-Shot pellets rest on a cushioned pad in the shot container that allows the pellets to flow better through the choke. In addition, the Remington Hevi-Shot shot container is much thicker than previous Hevi-Shot loaded rounds and that thickness minimizes pellet contact with the barrel or choke. Under laboratory test conditions, Remington has fired in excess of 500 rounds through each Remington choke tube offered, including Ventilator (.655") and "lead only" full (.691") without any dimensional changes being encountered. With the limited number of rounds used in normal Turkey hunting, Remington's testing represents many lifetimes of reasonable gun use. Will Hevi-Shot damage my Remington shotgun No. When used in modern Remington shotguns, in good working condition, Remington Hevi-Shot will not cause choke wear in low volume usage such as Turkey Hunting. However, cosmetic rub marks will occur. Remington's guns with fixed full chokes will show similar results. Remington Hevi-Shot ammunition utilizes our super-tough, high density polyethylene shot container that minimizes contact between Hevi-Shot pellets and the barrel and choke. In addition, the pellets are cushioned at the bottom of the shot container to allow them to flow through the choke more easily. For waterfowl hunters, where the shell usage is generally much higher, Remington recommends using chokes recommended for steel shot pellets. That is - skeet, IC, modified and full - "lead or steel". How does Hevi-Shot pattern in tight Turkey Chokes Tighter, up to a point. Because of the superior ballistic performance of Hevi-Shot pellets, an increase in pattern density versus lead will occur, especially beyond 35 yards. When choke diameters are tighter than .665", pattern density begins to degrade. Hevi-Shot will produce the tightest patterns through a choke of approximately 0.675" diameter + .005". In laboratory testing, a standard full choke (.691") produced an average pattern density of 88% in a 30 inch circle at 40 yards. The I.C. choke (.718") produced an average of 70%, considered to be the industry standard pattern density for "full" choke. Remington's new Hevi-Shot extended Turkey choke tube has been optimized with this 0.675" diameter to consistently produce incredible 94% patterns. Can I use other manufacturers' firearms / choke tube Any modern shotgun, in good working condition, designed or recommended for use with steel shot, should be suitable for use with Hevi-Shot. We recommend that a consumer contact the manufacturer for its recommendation. As a result of our extensive testing, we believe that the limited number of rounds used in Turkey Hunting is unlikely to create any more than cosmetic rub marks on chokes not rated for use with steel shot. However, the manufacturer of the choke tube should be contacted concerning its recommendations regarding the suitability for use with Remington Hevi-Shot loads. What after-market choke tubes are suitable for use with Hevi-Shot Any choke tube that is manufactured from high-quality steel, such as stainless, should be acceptable for use with Hevi-Shot. Choke tube manufacturers such as Rhino, Patternmaster, Carlson's, Truglo and Trulock offer Turkey choke tubes that are suitable for use with Hevi-Shot. What is the density of HEVI-SHOT® compared to other metals? The density of steel is about 7.8 g/cc. Lead shot runs about 11 g/cc. HEVI-SHOT® is about 12 g/cc. When will HEVI-SHOT® 3 ½ inch shell? We do not plan on developing a 3-½ inch load at this time, but our reloading partners may offer recipes for these types of shells. What Chokes are recommended for the various loads? Since HEVI-SHOT® is "heavier than lead"®, it patterns very tightly. For the turkey loads a full choke is OK. This is because the loads are fully buffered. We have use from a 665 and up. For waterfowl we recommend an improved cylinder over decoys, and modified choke for pass shooting. You may find that you need less choke (or even no choke) with HEVI-SHOT®. Will the price come down? HEVI-SHOT® is made from tungsten, nickel, and iron. These raw materials are very expensive. Nevertheless, we are continually improving our manufacturing processes. As we improve manufacturing and increase yields, we hope to decrease our costs and pass that savings on to our customers. It is our goal at HEVI-SHOT® to be priced at least 10% below other premium non-toxic shot shells. We think our suggested retail price meets that goal today. How is HEVI-SHOT® different from Steel? Picture this as an example of HEVI-SHOT®. Imagine your favorite baseball pitcher, say Nolan Ryan, standing 30 feet away. He has a ping pong ball (steel) and he throws it at you. Relax: it won’t do too much damage. Now picture Nolan throwing a golf ball (HEVI-SHOT®) at you. It is going to hurt you and may even kill you. The projectile is the same size, the muzzle velocity is the same, but the density of HEVI-SHOT® makes all the difference in the world. Does HEVI-SHOT® have federal approval? HEVI-SHOT® received federal approval for waterfowl hunting on January 4, 2001. This was our go ahead for full manufacturing and marketing. Has HEVI-SHOT® won awards yet? HEVI-SHOT® won 'Best of Show' in the New Product Center at the 2001 Shot Show® in New Orleans, on 14 January 2001. This was a major compliment because for the first time in the show’s history the award came from the retailers and manufacturers in attendance. I guess we know what our peers think of us! Randy Lewis also shot HEVI-SHOT® on his way to winning the 2000 National Wild Turkey Federation Still Target competition. Are there any restrictions on using HEVI-SHOT®? Only use HEVI-SHOT® in guns designed for modern steel ammunition What is HEVI-SHOT®? HEVI-SHOT® is a revolutionary, non-toxic shotgun shell with superior lethality. HEVI-SHOT® is revolutionary because it has a density that is actually higher than that of lead. No other shot product has ever achieved this kind of density, and no other product has the ballistic advantages we achieve from this density advantage. How does this help me? Simply speaking, using HEVI-SHOT® will make you a better hunter. How can it make me a better hunter? Because HEVI-SHOT® is "heavier than lead"®, you will be able to use a smaller pellet size with superior lethality. Smaller pellet size means you will shoot more pellets per round, with far higher knockdown power. Statistically, this substantially boosts your probability of a clean kill, and you can take longer shots with greater certainty of a kill. Higher probability of a clean kill means you can be a more ethical hunter. Those are some bold claims. Why should I believe you? Read some testimonials from some users of HEVI-SHOT® I asked my friend Kevin Jacobson to do an upper body shot so we could gauge penetration and lethality. He held at the point where the wing joins the body, penetration was complete on the body hits. It may be only one turkey, but the results speak for themselves - IMPRESSIVE. 45 yard shot 1 ¼ oz. Load #4's at a 23 pound turkey. Ron Reiber Production Manager from Hodgen Powder: The turkey shat was approximately 30 yards. I put the sight right on his head and dropped him. When cleaned I found no stray pellets in the body. It was only one shot but hit the bird hard. HEVI-SHOT® #4 1 ¼ oz. Load Tom Muff a HEVI-SHOT® CO-tester Read more testimonials from satisfied HEVI-SHOT® customers on our Testimonials page OK, so it is better. Why should I buy it? Hunting is about beating the odds, and HEVI-SHOT® gives you an absolute, measurable, and tangible advantage at a value better than steel, and far better than other non-toxic premiums.
