My daughter is wanting a shotgun so she can hunt turkey with dad. I am looking for a 20ga with LOP of 12 inches, but I do not know very many manufacturers that produce guns for the youth. So I am asking for some help from the members here. I would like the gun to be a single shot for its simplicity. It has to be a 20ga or smaller and light. My cash range is around $350-$400. I am also wondering if a shotgun in a gage smaller than a 20ga is capable of harvesting a turkey (i.e. 410), not sure on this. I know a 20ga is quite capable. Like i said earlier, the LOP needs to be around 12 inches and finding a gun with that criteria is rather difficult. I am willing to cut the stock if I can find a gun that is light enough for her to carry comfortably in the woods and providing that the gage is effective for turkey.

Personally if I were you I would seriously look at getting her a Benelli Nova "youth" in a 20 gauge. This way you can change multiple chokes and she can use it for years to come not only for turkey hunting but for deer, upland, rabbit and even shooting clay pigeons. The Benelli Nova is a very well built gun and you will find it a fantastic buy for her. Take her to your local gun shop and have her shoulder the youth model and see how it fits. I would almost guarantee that you will end up taking the Benelli Nova 20 ga. YOUTH model home for her.
Good Luck and let us know what you decide on.

I would suggest you buy her a remington 870 pump 20 gauge... You don't have to get her the youth model if you don't want to... LOP will be about 14 inches. You can have a gunsmith cut 2 inches off the stock and fit the gun perfectly to her for about $25 or so. The entire deal would run about $350... My nephew just got the set up from me for Christmas, He is 12 for another month but not to big. Gun fits him fine. No recoil shock or complaing. Shoots trap with it and breaks about half the targets. Here he is with a bird he shot with a 410 single shot. I personally think a 20 is fine for turkey with a full choke tube or extra full,, anything smaller and you have to be real close to hold the pattern.

My buddy bought his young first time hunter a 20 ga. Mossberg 505 youth model last year for turkey season. He said it was a very nice shogun and came with a certificate to upgrade to a larger stock when the old one was outgrown. KT

Thanks all. Some great gun listed here Benelli, Moseberg, Remington, etc. I really like the idea Moseberg has with the stock exchange. I will take her out to look at all the makes listed and based off of her input we will then make a decision.

My boys are into girls now (teenagers) but occasionally they still like to get in the woods with me from time to time. Getting the right gun, that keeps them interested and going with you will build lifetime memories for you and your son/daughter. And that's what is all about!! God Bless!

Getting the kids into the woods is great, but get them to the range to shoot all year long. I know with the price of ammo going almost as high as the oprice of fuel it is tough. But shooting is an all year event. So bring them to the trap or skeet fields near you and get them smoking clay birds. It will keep them tuned into the hunting and shooting games....
