I have an 870 that I can not get the cap off the end. It has a plug in it to stop from putting more shells in. I would like the option of being able to take it out but I don't know how

I have an 870 super mag express and especially for the first time try pushing down on the barrel assemble this should release some of the pressure on the plug cap. also Sear has that robogrip wrench and you can put plastic covers on and it won't scratch up the gun.

Are you talking about the Nut holding the barrel on or the cap holding the plug in?

duh didn't think about that I've got several shotguns and remember that one of them I think it is the 870 does have a cap on the plug after you get the nut off and I think it has a large slot in ti for a big flathead or butter knife and if you put either in ti and push down it will compress the spring and you turn it (don't think it matter which way) and it will release. hope this helps

so are we talking about #11 or #12 the one on the exterior #11 should have a full X on it the other #12 should have a - on it or it might be blank regardless push it in and try turning it if it is #11 try pushing down on the barrel at the same time and turning the cap.

Thanks everyone. Well you need more Karma Clearwaterart. The plug is springsteel in the shape of a cup with a hole in the bottom and a slot that goes from the rim to the hole in the bottom of the cup. I pried it out and you squeeze it till the slot closes and push it back in. Basically a press fit.( A tight on at that ) Wondered how that came out for twenty years.
