Can't stress this one enough. I had a bad experience last year with my shotgun. I had been out 2 springs ago and it rained alot. Well, I had completely neglected to (don't normall do this) clean my gun after the turkey season. It worked fine for the first two shots on the range in preparation for the upcoming deer season, but then my gun jammed and the action was stuck in the open position. There was grime and tiny twigs all inside the gun and was a pain to clean. Some rust had developed too and I just couldn't believe the work I had to put into it to get it back to normal. Definitely learned a valuable lesson there and right now.... she's a well oiled machine!
I got a great little cleaning kit from Walmart that has all of the accessories you could want in a cleaning kit. It has all of the brushes for all gauges and even ones for rifles and it only cost under $20. Nice little walnut wood box it comes in too. Check it out sometime. Great little investment!

GF - Tell me you are not still using a cleaning rod and brass brush! If you don't already use it, buy a Bore Snake! That little gadget makes cleaning a barrel quite easy. Give 'er a try and git 'er done!

I've always wondered how well they worked. I don't mind the rod and brush... kind of a tradition I guess. But I wouldn't mind gettin a snake and see how it works.

I don't think a Bore snake can replace a Cleaning rod and bore brush for removing heavy fouling in a barrel from heavy use...Like Waterfowl hunting where you are shooting alot of loads on every outing...With todays hotter loads I think we have more plastic fouling in the barrels then ever before which is going to take some pretty good scrubbing to remove...A Bore Snake is fine for light cleaning after a days hunt but lets face it how often do we really clean our guns after each outing?... I wouldn't throw away the cleaning kit yet...

You will see s 2-inch section where the fibers of the "snake" at really tight and contain spiral brass bristols like a brush (albeit not as many as a brush either). This really loosens up the crud. If anything remains...it's JB Non-Embedding Bore Cleaner time with the Makita.
