I bought a 45-70 about a year ago, ive been shooting 405 grain flat nose bullets outta it and it does pretty good but i havent really sighted it in yet,i might take it out deer huntin a time or to but i cant make up my mind about how far to sight it at,im shooting open sights, its an NEF with a 22 inch barrel on it,shot might stretch to about 100-150 yards but most about 50 any suggestions on where to sight in,or if i should even bother putting a scope on it?

Now here's my opinion on the 300-grain .45-70 (based 100% on internet surfing): Trajectory Analysis of 300-Grain 45-70A typical 300-grain bullet can produce the following trajectory out of a 22" barrel. TRAJECTORY: +3.5" @ 100-YDS, ZERO @ 150-YDS, -8.3" @ 200-YDS. As such, 150 yards is reasonable but sighting in depends on the typical distance you might shoot. Setting your NEF up with a 100-yard zero may be an option if plan to shoot 100 yards or less. Otherwise, sight in at the +3.5" at 100 yards to "help" with the 125 to 150 yard shots. Plenty accurate to take whitetail sized game out to 150 yards. Killing Power Analysis of 300-Grain 45-70Killing power of a 45-70 at 100 yards is 50.1 (good). Killing Power index is calculated by: Energy at 100 yards (in foot pounds) x Sectional Density (taken from reloading manuals) x Bullet Frontal Area (in square inches) = Killing Power figure at 100 yards. .45-70 Government (300 grain at 1810 fps) - 50.1 .45-70 Government (405 grain at 1330 fps) - 55.0 (for comparison) The 300-grain 45-70 is on par (killing power wise) with a .30-06 Springfield utilizing a 180-grain bullet (KP=49.2 at 100yds). Scope AdviceHeck yes. A decent Sightron SII, Leupold, Weaver, etc. will do you just fine. Ranging reticles are also available. My answer to your questions are obviously "yes." Scope it and sight it in. 45-70 = dead deer. Very dead. -Sloppy

Wow Sloppy! Very informative & I'm impressed! I didn't know all that stuff but I'm definitely not a reload or ballistic buff! Can you do the same on the 444 Marlin, I'm curious???
PS: I have a 30-06 & I'm curious as to how it and the 444 compare within shorter yardages like 100-150 yds.
Kudos to Sloppy!

PS: I have a 30-06 & I'm curious as to how it and the 444 compare within shorter yardages like 100-150 yds. Kudos to Sloppy! Sure Mikey. Here you go: Bullet Weight, Muzzle Velocity, Muzzle Energy Statistics .444 Marlin caliber statistics: Wt. Vel. Energy 200 2754 3358 240 2302 2817 265 2320 3166 Trajectory Analysis of .444 Marlin Caliber.444 Marlin (240 FP at 2350) +3.0" at 100 yards, -2.6" at 200 yards (I'll post other bullet weights later) Killing Power Analysis 444 Marlin (265 grain)Killing Power index is calculated by: Energy at 100 yards (in foot pounds) x Sectional Density (taken from reloading manuals) x Bullet Frontal Area (in square inches) = Killing Power figure at 100 yards. Killing power of a 265-grain (2325 fps) 444 Marlin at 100 yards is 63.4(very good but recoil may be an issue) The 265-grain 444 Marlin is on par (killing power wise) with a .300 WSM (KP=59.5 at 100 yards) and the .300 Win Mag calibers utilizing a 180-grain bullet. .444 Marlin = Very Dead Deer and a shoulder bruise (for me)- :)Sloppy

Wow! Thanks Sloppy! I don't mind the 444's kick & I've been thinking about getting one! Let me know when you are serious about purchasing one. We can purchase 2 and get a better discount than if we purchased them individually. I know a couple FFL holders here in my county that will sell the guns at 1 to 5 dollars over cost + tax (none for you). Also, a couple on-line gun stores I know keep cutting me deals so....let me know. Maybe we can get them engraved with some R&S Club Artwork or something. - :)Sloppy

hey thanks guys, does anyone know of a good cheap reloading press and a set of dies i could buy so i could start reloading just for plinking, because i dont want to throw 20 or 30 dollars towards a box of bullets just for that Check out the RCBS Rock Chucker single stage press and dies at Cabelas. If you want to save more $$$, check out EBay...they sell new and used presses all the time. My 2nd choice would be the Dillion AT500 that has the ability to be upgraded to an RL550 for a fee. The RL550 is a progressive reloader whereas the AT500 and Rock Chucker are not. -Sloppy
