I am wanting to install a muzzle brake on my magnum. Just wondering what are some good ones and any recomendations on this topic as far as companies and gunsmiths to install them.
Thanks Keith

I sent my dad's 300mag off to Magna Port several years ago. It is great. It kicks like a .308 now.

I've shot a few guns that were ported & my perception was that it reduced the muzzle lift (barrel doesn't buck upward) but it didn't really reduce the amount of foot pounds delivered to my shoulder. Of course I'm talking big guns, like the 340 Weatherby Mag, 300 Weatherby Mag & 300 Remington Ultra Mag, all in bolt actions. They all tend to bust you pretty good in the shoulder...

I'd worry more about my hearing than I would the recOil. Years back I bought a real nice Kleingunther rifle in 257 Wheatherby magnum double set triggers with a muzzlebrake shOt it one time in the field and sold it quick....my ears are still ringing. jOe

I dont usually wear ear plugs while hunting. But I have a friend who does. The bad thing is he had surgery to both his ears so to protect them he wears them, but say the doves are fixing to fly over him I can yell and scream but he just say what?? its kinda of funny to see. I am like Mrj i work in a big factory with boilers compressors, Chillers and such. I wear them when i am in a area over 80 dec. I dont have cans running down a line at my end of the plant so its nice. There are som things in life we dont appreciate till they are gone.Hearing can be one of these. Tim

Yeah, I've already got a little upper range loss in my left ear from shooting when I was a kid. I shoot right handed, so when shooting long guns, the right ear is down against the stock & more protected vs. your left ear being open to the blast. I don't wear plugs when I'm out deer hunting and/or going to make hopefully a single shot on an animal but I wear them dove hunting & waterfowl hunting or I'll have my ears covered with a hat/hood when waterfowl hunting. I'll keep my right ear plug out, while I'm listening for ducks/geese in the distance but once they're coming in, the plug goes in! When you think about the mag shells you use to hunt waterfowl, it's even worse on your ears than dove hunting.

While I cannot speak for this muzzle brake (yet), it is one of the more interesting designs. Machine-lathed right into the end of the barrel. No increase in overall length like a Browning BOSS or Weatherby Accu-Brake. link: www.bellmtcs.com/store/index.php?cid=151 But do listen to jOe. I don't care who makes the brake you have installed, they all increase muzzle blast noise levels. Protect your ears. Sloppy

As far as reduced recoil the facts are that it does. The several places I have researched this have done test with a device that actually measures the recoil to the shoulder before and after the break is installed. Some of them showed 50 percent in reduced (felt) recoil, So it does work. It is also louder, but that is no problem. I bought a pair of those electronic hearing protectors/amplifiers and they work great. I will wear them hunting as I do have some hearing loss in my left ear as well, (at my work I need my hearing so I have to wear them to keep from getting any more loss) and with these on I hear better.
