I don't know anything about the HMR 17 but I have a Marlin model 783 in 22 Mag that's the most accurate small caliber gun I've ever shot. It's absolutely awesome shooting the full jacket shells vs the hollow points & I think it's a credit to the micro-groove that Marlin uses in the barrel. So in other words, I'm a big Marlin fan! I shot one but I prefer the Henry Varmit Express 17 hmr better. It's faster smoother and IMO looks better.

I have two Ruger "Hummers"! One is the M77 Bolt and the other is a lever action. Both are tack drivers with the nod going to the M77 Bolt but I like the LOOKS of the lever better :oBill

I second that about the Ruger. I also have a Ruger M77 .17 HMR bolt action with a synthetic stock that I picked up new at a gun show back in June. I absolutely love it! So much for the old .22 long............RIP

Thanks all !!! The main reason I was considering the Marlin was the price. I'm not going to pay nearly $400 for a HMR 17, so Ruger is out of the question. I can pick up the plain Marlin for $150 at Wally World. I have 4 Ruger 10-22s and one Winchester 22 auto so I don't really need a new small game rifle, but you know how it is, always wanting something new and different!!!LOL I plan on my son using it to shoot rabbits at our club. Shots of up to 200 yards are possible and I was hopeing this would allow him some long range shooting practice and help to get the fire going in him about hunting.

I have the savage 17 HMR. Cheap, accurate as all get out. At 100 yards under a 1/2 inch is the norm.
It is not much to look at but for $98 it is the best shooting rifle that I have out to 100 yards.

Try the trigger on the savage before you buy. It shoots really well but you have to learn how the trigger works. Mine feels like it has a "notch" at the highest part of pull strength. Get it up to that point and any extra pressure will make it go BANG. Most will not like it but it does shoot well..........at least mine does. Keep it clean.
