Hey guys,
I need some experienced advice. I have a .222 cal. 340D Savage rifle w/ a 6 x scope. I'm going to start to hunt coyotes at night w/ shots at about 150 yards or less (this is guestimate). I would like to know what brand and type of bullet will work best, quick clean kill with no exit wound for the fur. I would like to know what you use and the results you got. Thanks ahead of time guys.

A 40gr Nosler will do it.The lighter your bullet the less likely a exit wound. You might want to try a couple different brands to see what your guns likes best.I have had two 222's,a Sav. and a Win. Pretty sweet shooting rifles.I still have about 50 rounds on the reloading bench.

I don't think you'll go too far wrong with a .222Rem. I have a couple of them and both are very accurate out to about 200yds. I wouldn't try to extend them much further than that though. A Nosler 55gr. Bal. Tip has always performed well for me in this caliber. Best wishes.

If you reload is my first question? If so there are many good ones you can use. A great one for coyotes i use is the 55gr speer tnt hp. It does the job for sure. vangunsmith

The lighter the bullet the lest amount of damage will be done ie going through the animal. I would say the 40grn nozzler would be your best bet. The second question would be how accurate are you with your rifle because a head shot through the eye would ensure even if the bullet went through that you would have only 1 hole in the hide.

id think at 150 yds or less any varmit bvullet is going to blow chunks out of the critter.
i know in the 22/250 and 220 they do. i also know that ive punched holes through coyotes at close range with 277 3006 and 2506 hunting bullets. and you could hardly tell the animal was shot.
the balistic tip varmit bullets will do better at longer ranges when velocities slow down. that close even with your caliber id imagine your results will be big mixed bag of mangled coyotes with a few that look alright.

RNG! I have the same old gun. Mines a 1959 vintage. One thing I have found over the years of trying different things is that it doesn't like anything but 50 gr bullets. Doesn't sound like your headed into reloading yet but if you are 50gr Hornady SPSX with 21 gr H4198 is the magic load not only for me but a whole slew of other guys I've met on varmint forums. Very accurate little bullet and less money than the VMax. I quite often shoot them in .223 too. This bullet was designed for the 222 velocity and higher velocities can cause premature expansion. There is actually a disclaimer on some of the older boxes that tell you that. Hands down the best bullet I've found for my rifle. Last summer I broke down and bought some of the Winchester Varmint packs with the 50sp about 200 miles from home in chuck infested hayfields. They surprised me on paper tacked to a fence post and were nearly as cheap as buying new brass which I needed anyway. You might try a box in your and see how they work for you. BTW if you take to reloading for the 340 you must size you cases full length and discard them at the first sign of being tight in the chamber. This is due to the flimsy extractor. I've had it happen to me and I've seen it happen to other 340's too over the years Have fun /tt
