![](http://www.geocities.com/huntersbarn/turkey032.jpg) We had a very sucessful spring season. All three birds were in the 20 lbs. class. Spring gobbler season is an exciting time of year around here. We can hear em gobblin on the mountain behind my place. Pre season the mountains ring out with birds on every ridge. It's funny how when the season opens they all shut up. We gotta cover miles and miles to find a hot bird. Our favorite place is behind my house. Its a chunk of mixed hardwoods, conifers and small clearings about 4x2 miles with no roads or cabins. Kinda wild country for N.E.Penna. The spring season here is unpredictable, the mornings start out frosty and by quittin time you are swettin. We try an put one to bed {listen for them to fly up to roost an gobble once...sometimes twice} the night before. Then plan our ambush for the next morning. If we can't put one to bed we head up the mountian way before light an listen for tree talk{faint clucks, purrs, and yelps}. If they are still quiet there is nothing left but runnin an gunnin{hiking fast and quiet an callin every 500yds or so} That's how we got these birds 1 8" an one 9" beards. It was more like they ambushed us. We were headin to a new location when Dad did a call and 2 answered about 100 yds away. Nothin we could do but stop an drop. We cammoed up fast, Dad did a few soft yelps an they came a runnin. It was fantastic to see it Each bird passing the other, gobblin like mad and their heads flashing red white an blue. They charged straight on me ... we had to take em in self defence. For those of you who haven't turkey hunted...there is nothing like it. When a gobbler dubble then tripple gobbles an is coming straight at you it can get your blood boiling. I think if a turkey had a sense of smell along with his eyesight {sees in color} and hearing {better than a deer} you'd never get one. We got another bird that was much bigger {25 lb. class} but his beard was 4". We had a hard winter last year and ice balls, snow balls stick to ther beards an break them off.

![](http://www.geocities.com/huntersbarn/Gobble.jpg) Nothing like your first. MAN thats gettin on 20 years ago...LOL This was my first...he went 22.6 lbs.gutted...beard 13" {four strands} the rest of beard went 10" {see ice balls} 1 1/4' spurs that showed heavy fightin. Probably the best turkey I ever ate. I got out of work early and was sittin on the front poarch sippin a brew...thinkin about huntin turkey the next day. He let loose with a gobble, then another, then a doubble, then a tripple. WAAHOO i sez...I know where he is. Tommorow I'll go set up next to him. It was 3.30 pm... can't hunt spring gobbler after noon. Something about hunters scaring hens off their nests in the spring is why. They won't go back to the nest if you scare the sh*t outta them. So dark an early the next day I work my way up the mountian and move into where I think he is. I stop an figgure and a hen bursts outta a tree. Sh*t he's here. Stop, drop, an set up. I walked right under the flock and only one hen flew {they usually all fly off........Game over} Not this time. I dropped into a depression an listened. The trees became alive with turkey talk...for fifteen minutes I listened to what they said....It was something I won't forget. All this time the gobbler is silent. Then the boss hen gets loud....I pulls out the slate and imatate what she says...over and over...yelps, putts an purrs... man does this pi$$ her off. As it breaks light she and two of her underlings fly down almost in my lap....an the Gobbler lets loose....I thought he was gonna run outta air. The hens are ten feet off my shoulder an lookin at me. He flies down 20 yds in front of me behind a small ridge...but I already have my shootin iron pointed his way. He dubble, then tripple, then dubble gobbles.I can't see him an the hens move closer to me...feet away. The boss hen does one small cluck and he goes wild, and just puffs and struts up on top of the ridge 15 yds into my bead. Game Over.
