As of now we have had 57,9 inches of snow ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Third all time record ,, and winter is not over yet .. i think this will really take a toll on the deer herd in the Pines with no food to be found and deep snow ,, I hope I'm wrong ,,,, WHAT DO Y'ALL THINK?? , I KNOW MOST OF Y'ALL LIVE WHERE THIS IS NOT MUCH SNOW ,,

Yeah definitely gonna cause some stress on them. Along with the turkeys. Could wipe out some.

That much snow and extended cold weather is never good for wildlife. Somehow the whitetails seems to survive, though they probably will take a hit. What happens here, when we have the bad winters, is the cougars and the coyotes have a feast fest on the weakend deer. They are probably harder on the herds than the weather.

We haven't got that much snow this year and normally don't but this winter has been pretty bad, the cold being the worst. I can't speak for you guys in the North with the deep, deep snow but around here the birds do much worse than the deer. It is horrible for Quail and Pheasant then the Turkey begin to suffer when it gets deep enough. The deer seem to move to food soon as they can and stay there, not moving much at all, conserving energy and the cold doesn't seem to have that much affect on them. They are browsers any way so now is a good time to have the new growth timber, 6 foot or less in height, that is where my deer have been, in the brush. Now that we have had a snow melt they have moved back out to the fields, have seen 50 some this week, all looking in very good shape. The few turkey we have, have moved to the cow herds and are following the cows, this will help them to survive and in 2 or 3 weeks will be doing very well staying with the cows. My food plots were a failure again this year, they were eaten into the dirt by the first snow, my crop field fed everything until the snow got deep. Where I've done timber stand improvement and have lots of new growth, well the deer loved these areas and moved there when it got real bad. Some guys including me can dislike the tangled mess of TSI when trying to get a shot at a deer but it does feed them well and you will always have deer so it's a good trade off.

Very good info Steve. People often forget deer are browsers. All the small trees and brush piles I created over the weekend attracted them immediately. And it created tangles for the songbirds and rabbits. The bunnies moved right in.
