My son was up for the weekend. We went this morning up to an area a couple of miles from the house. We located ourselves on the point of a ridge where we could watch the opposite hillside. About 7:30 the elk started moving across an opening at 275 yds. out. We closely watched the elk. One cow, two cows, twelve cows filed by. Not one with antlers this morning. We could hear all the cows barking clear as a bell before we saw them. Pretty exciting to listen to and watch. About twenty minutes later, here come two small whitetail bucks right below us at 125 yards. Chris couldn't make up his mind if he wanted to shoot one of them or not. Finally he decided he would, but than he shot over it. I don't think he really wanted to shoot that one. But to make sure one wasn't wounded, we climbed down the ridge to the skid road they were on. Chris on one road and I on the other. I got close to the bottom and spotted both bucks. They walked right by me on there way to going up the canyon, none the worse for wear. I put my crosshairs up on the bigger buck that Chris had shot at and said boom. They gave me a look and kept on a going. Fun morning to be out. Blue skies and 31 temp.
