First let me say that when a gun is used in a crime it upsets me to the core and to have the tragedy we had at Sandy Hook is about the worst that can happen in our country, it was inexcusable in every way to say the least.
I would like to know your opinion on the current gun control debate.
I for one, think it is going to be an extremely heated issue in coming days/weeks and have found myself very frustrated when listening to our elected officials, some citizens, and the news media.
On issues this serious it should be well informed, professional, calm, cool headed people making the decisions that will affect us all. No matter the outcome, any law will affect us all.
I'm going to mention a few things that I'm thinking to get the conversation started, not saying I'm right about any of them, they are just my opinion.
1) I fully support the 2nd amendment and think that it would have to be abolished from our bill of rights by Congress for gun/ammo confiscation to be legal.
2)I think the White House is going to take advantage of the latest tragedy to pass rules/bans/laws that I do not agree with.
3) I can not see the gun control laws that are currently being debated doing any good whatsoever in making us safer.
4) My thinking is that most gun control laws that do pass will only cause more people to qualify as criminals and will not stop the true criminals or mentally insane.
5) Even if total confiscation were to be implemented down the road, it would not work to make us safer or is it even possible.
My thoughts on making our schools, streets and citizens safer lean toward strict enforcement of laws we already have. Too many people are getting through the system, getting out early or even getting off completely for crimes they have committed, tests they have failed or just being ignored because no one will or can take responsibility for them.
Not saying it is the answer but I have no problem with properly trained people with guns being placed in our schools, however I think it should be left to the local state/county/school boards.
It is so frustrating to me to listen to these debates and hear all the improper terms used when talking about guns, it is in the news media, in Congress, in the White House, it tells me they know nothing about the subject. Some examples: it is not called a (point two two three) it is simply a .223, pronounced two twenty three.
I understand which weapons they are referring to when they say "Assault weapons" but any gun aimed at me is an "Assault" weapon in my mind.
Semi Automatic is not the same as Automatic, the explanation is easily researched but no one does because they do not know they are wrong in the first place.
Some people DO use the "Assault" weapons to hunt with, especially varmints. I do not own one and do not want to own one, that has been my choice.
All guns can be dangerous, dead is dead, simple as that. Yes, the higher velocities found in rifle cartridges have a lot of energy and can pass on a tremendous amount of shock but personally I don't want a 12 gauge or a .45 or even the small .22 used on me. Now if given a hundred yard head start I would prefer you use the 12 gauge on me, but in a class room, well like I said before, dead is dead. The point I'm trying to make with this is : where does it stop? Where do they stop? Will they stop?
