I took the following pics in the Dragoon Mtn Range West of Sunsites AZ. The pics are also the same area that Chief Cochise called home for 15 years as he waged war on the US Army and any settlers or stagecoaches that passed in or near the valley below his lookout on the Mtn range. He kept sentinels posted 27/7 and no one got through nor was he ever defeated in battle. Cochise had been falsely accused of a crime and escaped to this area to wreak terror on any one entering this valley. After being in the area it was plain to see just how he could have done so, there is no way out, quite simply a trap if you were to enter his "Stronghold" In a 16 month period the Butterfield Stage line lost 22 drivers to the Cochise band as they tried to cross the Northern edge of the Dragoon Mtns. The Chief died peacefully on a newly formed Chiricahua Res and was secretly buried somewhere in the area these pics were taken, the location has never been found or revealed. The road going into the Stronghold and the valley that was overlooked. The rocky areas on the Mtn sides were excellent places to hide and fight from as anyone entered the valley. The trap was in this valley. The stream that flows down from the mtns above had wildlife, water, berries and other food that sustained Chief Cochise along with his 1000 people for nearly 15 years.

Those folks had to be very knowledgeable and pretty darn tough to live in that country for that long. Another nice history lesson and fine pics Grizz.
